Schools CLOSING due to Suspected SWINE FLU in UTAH, all 3 student suspected considered SECOND GENERATION CARRIERS.

SALT LAKE CITY -- The Utah Department of Health says there may be one "probable" case of swine flu in Utah.

The Public Health Lab identified the strain as influenza A but was unable to determine the more specific fingerprint of the virus.

They are sending a flu sample to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta for further testing. Results are expected by sometime late Friday.

The health department stressed this is a "probable" case, not a "confirmed" case of the swine flu.

Because it's not confirmed, it isn't releasing any other details regarding the individual. Officials aren't saying who this person is, where they live or how they contracted the flu.

At this point, they don't know if the individual has taken any anti-viral medication. They did say the individual is in home isolation and not in serious condition.

Teresa Garrett, with the Utah Department of Health, said, "It's our policy not to release information on a probable case; could turn out not to be swine influenza. It could turn out to be something else. It's just not appropriate to release that information at this time."

The health department apparently detected this case late Tuesday afternoon. It says it's tested about 50 Utah samples since Tuesday, and of those 50, only one came up as a probable swine flu case.

I thought I saw a thread on Baltimore, MD already having a case of swine flu, too. I guess staying out of Park City might be an idea.

4 schools closing in milwaukee today. 2 suspected cases.

I live in Austin Tx and I am beside myself with anger/grief at the lack of concern and action here in our district. I called, I emailed.... *sigh*

As A fellow Texan I understand your frustration...you have to understand this is TAKS test week(Ends today) more districts will start closing now....those Admin have to get their money 1st!

Yeah, I was thinking about that concern. Especially with NO CHILD LEFT BEHIND. Now, is that why California Stated Emergency a few days ago.

So that they could delve deeper into the Fed's pockets earliest? They seem to go fast on that, but I wonder if it helps them with the Testing/NCLB School District issues?

IF you watch the video (I just did), it says these were "second generation" infection. And, that the students were Elementary Students.

Im sorry to ask a stupid question, BUT,... what is a second generation carrier ?

I know a lot of people especially little kids are getting sick. My daughter had a fever all night. Will it ever be recorded as swine flu? Nope as I didn't go to the ER for it like some people do.

Someone who has caught the flu not connected to the source in this case from someone who has no contact with Mexico

Park City Schools closed over swine flu concernsPARK CITY, Utah (ABC 4 News) - Classes at all eight schools in the Park City School District are canceled at least through May 4 due to swine flu concerns. Students and faculty are being told to stay home.

Park City School district consists of 4400 students and eight schools. Officials confirmed that they will be closing schools at least until Monday as a result of a possible swine flu outbreak.

ABC 4 News has confirmed that one of the students is the same patient announced as "probable" by the Utah Department of Health on Wednesday.

Three students, elementary and junior high aged, could be contaminated. Park City’s superintendent says one of the students had been in Mexico a couple weeks ago for spring break. Confirmation of the virus is still up in the air until lab testing at the CDC can be completed.

The school district expects to know results on at least one of the cases tomorrow afternoon at which point they will determine if they need to disinfect all their schools.

Below is the official press statement released early Thursday by the Park City School District:
PARK CITY SCHOOL DISTRICT SCHOOL CLOSURE – EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY

Dr. Ray Timothy, the Superintendent of Schools of the Park City School District, after consultation with the Park City Board of Education and health professionals throughout the state, has closed, effective immediately, all eight schools in the Park City School District. This action was taken as a proactive and precautionary measure after the identification of three students possibly infected with the Swine Flu. Confirmation of the virus is pending CDC laboratory testing.

All Park City School District facilities will remain closed at least through Monday, May 4. All school-related activities for this period are canceled. School Administrators are expected to be at their building to make sure no students are dropped off. Staff should not report to work.

“This decision was made after careful deliberation and with the best interests of our students, employees, and community in mind,” said Dr. Timothy. “We are putting the safety of our children first.”

Park City School District’s spring break was the week of April 13. A number of students and their families visited Mexico at that time where they may have been exposed to the H1N1 virus.

Local board members are supportive of Dr. Timothy’s decision. Five local health care providers joined in recommending the closure.

ABC 4 News has also learned that many day care centers have closed. Parents are advised to call their individual day care providers to see if they are closed.

Also, ABC 4 has also learned that private schools in the area are following suit and closing as well.

USA is what, in week 1 of this thing.. Mexico is what, week 4 or 5?

We are at Day 6 I believe...Day 35 in Mexico and Govt. shutting down

I live in Utah, Salt Lake City area. Last night at my career college more then 2/3rds of students were gone. I don't know for sure its related but the school has never had this many absent.

As some have pointed out many times.... we are not even a full week into H1N1 and Mexico is at least 2 weeks ahead of us. I fully expect that ALL schools nationwide are shut next week.

Yeah...that was probably a pin drop experience.
I am going shopping again today. Need a few more preps.
But, the last few days, have seen nothing to indicate concern.

Except, at Costco. Cashier asked us if we were prepping for the flu and that she was bummed. She has a Cruise in May going to Mexico. IE she will be stuck on the boat the whole time.

Governor Huntsman and other will have a News Conference at 12 pm MST on channel 5 and I am sure, 2, 4 and 13.

Should be interesting to see.

Overheard the lady in front of me complaining to the clerk about her children playing soccer with the kids from Park City and now she is nervous.

But, she wasn't stocking up on anything.
NO BODY was Stocking Up, though the parking lot was full.
Maybe its because a lot of people are encouraged to stock up normally -through church.

Says this flu is *sensitive* to Relenza & Tamiflu.

CDC announced the state of Utah had probable cases, before the State of Utah came forward, on their website. State wanted no announcement until ACTUAL confirmation.

Quite sure that WHO will come out with Pandemic Announcement soon. It is a legal mechanism to allow the Gov't to provide stockpiles to the states.

Our stockpile is in NorthWest of the State.
