HELP with CROWS at bird feeders!!
Okay so I am looking for suggestions:

I have a shepherds hook with 4 arms where I hang bird feeders.

One of the feeders is a tray feeder. (open top)

I put peanuts in there for the larger birds that eat the peanuts. (they cannot fit in smaller feeders)

For the last 2 weeks these CROWS have been coming and wiping out ALL the peanuts in that feeder in like 5 minutes. ($$$ expensive $$$)

I cannot get rid of the feeder because there are birds that want to feed from it.

So, I read that if you hang a black rag up that the CROWS will think it's a dead CROW and stay away.

And, it worked really well!

BUT it scared away the Bluejays and the Cardinals too. :(

So, I took it down and those CROWS are back.

Help. Any suggestions or experience with this?

Signed,

CROW Police

Crows need food too.

You could try buying corn and putting it on the ground in small piles....

Poor people do poor people things, and rich people do rich people things.

You cannot legislate the poor into prosperity by legislating the wealthy out of prosperity.

What one person receives without working for, another person must work for without receiving.

The government cannot give to anybody anything that the government does not first take from somebody else.

When half of the people get the idea that they do not have to work because the other half is going to take care of them, and the other half gets the idea that it does no good to work because somebody else is going to get what they work for, that my dear friend, is the beginning of the end of any nation.

You cannot multiply wealth by dividing it!

when you rob Paul to give to Peter ... ... ... you will always get Peters support!

Yes, I know that CROWS need food.

Do you know how much CROWS eat?

If you 'scatter corn' you only attract MORE CROWS.

They would eat the corn and then STILL eat the peanuts too!

Same problem.

My grandma used to take her left-overs and food scraps -- pizza, bread, everything -- and leave it near her feeders. The crows would eat that and leave the feeders alone.

Thanks.

I tried that.

(The deflection from the bird feeder trick)

Didn't work.

Got more CROWS and peanuts went even quicker.

I appreciate the suggestion though.

Exactly. I had quite a few crows showing up to my feeders but for me, I did not care. I love them, BEAUTIFUL bird... clever and smart.

The only thing that would work is a screen with holes large enough for the birds you want to have the feed but too small for the crows to get through.

Shotgun
Dozens of them. Armed to the teeth. I'm outnumbered. Outgunned. But the alley is crooked, dark, and very narrow. They can't surround me. Sometimes you can beat the odds with a careful choice of where to fight.

HEY! That sounds like a GREAT idea!

Duh huh? LOL

This is excellent.

There are Woodpeckers and Bluejays that feed from that feeder.

When the CROWS are here they take all the peanuts.

When the other birds come, nothing is left. :(

I am going to do this today.

Thank you Just A Thought.

I knew a farmer who had problems with crows once...They used to fly in and try to destroy the pecan trees (15 of them)...

He'd kill one and hang it upside down in one of the trees.

No more crows would go to that pecan grove.

You know what I find so facinating about birds?

They are the only animal that is detached from the earth and touch all 4 elements on earth.

The ground, the air, water (even the ocean), and the vegetation (tress etc.)

That cannot be said about any other animal.

There is something to that don't you think? :)

Thanks. I know that does work.

However, I could never kill a bird. (or any other living creature)

In the OP I said that I hung a black rag to feign a dead CROW.

But, it scared away other birds.

My intention was to scare away the CROWS only.

I like the screen idea a lot from JAT, and thought to try that.

I love peanuts. So here's the deal. I'll come by and hang out with my pellet gun and nail crows. And in return, I get to eat all the peanuts I can. You also supply the beer. Well, I need something to wash down the peanuts.

Interesting take, never thought of them that way; thanks.

I like watching them and get excited when a rarer species stops by. Most exciting was the rose breasted grosbeak, lol.

Must admit it's also very entertaining to watch our cats lie in wait atop the couch then hurl themselves at the windows overlooking the feeders.

Oh wow, another birdwatcher!

Yes! I like to see those more uncommon species stop by.

And, the rose breasted grosbeak is a beautiful bird.

Was it male or female? A pair?

I had a Mountain Bluebird just two days ago who stopped by for some water and some seed.

And, a Red-headed Woodpecker was here last week. (have not seen one of those in 8 years)

What other uncommon birds have you seen at your feeder?

Cats are pretty funny to watch with birds. (got two here)

The birds keep them occupied that's for sure huh?

i've been feeding birds for 11 yrs. i used to want the doves to stay away cause they eat so much, but...needless to say, when it's very cold i have to spend about 80$ mo. for sunflower seeds. but the crow thing, what i would suggest is get a halfway decent dry dog food and make them a seperate feeder to put it on. they like bread too so you can throw out any old bread, shoot, they like everything so you can put all leftovers out there. i found if the crows have other food, they won't go for the seeds so much. it's about all you can do as they will not respect a sign that says, no crows.

for the bird lovers..one day this winter a huge flock of goldfinches just showed up at my house. it is weird because they are so friendly and unafraid of me, they will come right up and sit on the deck rail not a foot away from me. there's about 50 of them, and usually it is a treat to see even 1 or 2 a summer here. they have such sweet little voices too, i call them sweetie birds. i love birds!!!

Re: HELP with CROWS at bird feeders!!
Stand outside near the bird feeder. Tip your head back. Open your mouth and fill with peanuts. When crows fly up and light on your nose and chin, snap your mouth shut. When other birds fly up and light on your face, allow them to eat.

Soon the crows will realize that they won't be getting any peanuts from you. Let's hope they don't get pissed and try for your eyeballs instead before they fly away in their eternal search for mo' peanuts.

I believe our former prez, the peanut farmer, pioneered this method, bty.

know what ya mean, i have been having to use my beer money to feed the birds. black oil sunflower seed has doubled in price. it's not bad when the weather is not too cold, but when it turns nasty, it's an all day feeding frenzy, i go thru a 25 lb. bag in 5 days. scary. they like to take my dogs rachel ray dogfood that i put a little olive oil on, back to their nests. i think it helps them get thru subzero nights. i worry about them like they are my babies(they are my babies all hundreds of them.)

Thanks for your suggestions.

Sounds like you may have quite the feeding set up?

Yes, Doves do eat a lot.

However, I don't mind the Doves too much because they are so passive and gentle; and do not bother the other birds.

(They sure poop a lot though. And sure leave a mess of seed husks to clean huh? LOL)

As for the CROWS:

The problem is they LOVE peanuts. (which is what they are taking)

I tried 'deflection' tactics and that was unsuccessful.

They still ate the peanuts too.

But, a poster suggested a screen and I think I may try that.

I appreciate the time you took and will try the dog food once I get the situation under control.

(By the way, I now understand why my sign 'no crows' was a miserable failure! LOL.)
