Anonymous Coward User ID: 543021 United States 11/06/2008 02:33 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | verly interestink Definitedly not a reference to the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation. Is this the Holy Roman Empire of the Russian Nation? The Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation was a production of the Roman Catholic Church. Is this Holy Roman Empire of the Russian Nation a production of the Greek Orthodox (Byzantium) Church. Byzantium Empire was the Eastern branch of the Roman Empire. But I too and interestedin the phrasing of "The Holy Third Rome". A term that I think has it that Moscow has been used occasionally as the Third Rome, beyond Rome, Italy (The First Rome), and Constantinople (The Second Rome) |

User ID: 506709 United States 11/06/2008 02:41 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Wow, this gave me a start. Published in english version of Russian newspaper PRAVDA Quoting: kestrel[link to english.pravda.ru] context: ... "That all changed, of course, as so many other things did, when the Anglo-American Trotskytes, the Neocons, attempted to restart the Cold War and to renew their sagging fortunes. They poked the bear, not directly, but by using their proxy Saakashvili. What they found was not a hibernating bear but the renewed Russian Imperial eagle of the Holy Third Rome."... I had a conversation in russian with a friend named Vlad. He explained that this referred to the 3rd rebirth of Rome, via the Eastern Church (Constantinople). The term "third reich" from Hitler's Germany, uses this same thinking, via the Western Church (Rome). As a student of Russia, this caught me by surprise. Any Russians out there want to give an opinion on Russia being the "Imperial eagle of the Holy Third Rome" versus Germany's Third Reich? LOL....ask Lotus.... he/she knows everything but can only reveal what God allows.....maybe there's a secret to be revealed as for the story.....do you think that Dubya might be all butt hurt if Russia was one-upping his ideas of how important he thinks he is? Maybe that's why he has felt so betrayed by Putin..... hmmmmmmmmmm |

(OP) User ID: 536088 United States 11/06/2008 06:32 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | a Russian Orthodox Monk, Philoteus (Filofey), wrote a letter to the Czar in 1510 with the famous quote: “All the empires of Christendom are united in thine, for two Romes have fallen and the third exists, and there will not be a fourth. No one will replace your Christian Tsardom!" “The supposedly unique merits of the Church of Moscow are used here (i.e the Third Rome quote) to justify the claim of the Muscovite ruler to lead a universal Christian empire. Moscow is the chosen city, and its prince is the chosen Emperor.” From ‘Russian Messianism’ by Peter J.S. Duncan, Routledge, 2000. This along with a really cool ivory throne, became a symbol of Russian CZAR's spiritual right to rule. Fascinating, that this was used in PRAVDA. btw, like your picture oneangrymom:) |

I've said before, Putin (choke...) may be our best hope (choke, strangle...ahhhhhhh!). |
