I'm pretty sure that is just a spider tearing the bees head off.

Robo bees? If the bee was a robot I don't think a spider would be chomping on it.

Yeah, like I said... something, undoubtedly, perfectly normal, but do look at the details.
There is NO viscera, no goo at all... just a hole that looks very much like torn metal.

and what do you think should be apparent? spurting blood? a spinal column? the spider has poked a leg through the bee's eye, and another is inserted at the margin where the carpace is sgmented...you adjusted the contrast to get the "metallic look"...if you look at the leg penetrating the back of the head, you will see that the leg has seperated a wedge of the carpace.... it's a bee, being killed by a spider....

Man, I need to examine the bees we have in the U.K., I don't remember ever seeing a bee here that's head looks anomalous when compared to it's body.

Weird bees you have in the US.

Although I think this is perhaps a bee-mimic fly (by the eye shape and the fact they touch in the middle) I don't see anything out of the ordinary. I enlarged the image and it looks like there is a space between the head and thorax, and the pedipalp (those two little 'legs' on the spider) happens to be gripping that space, with the other one resting on the eye. Or the mandibles pierced the area behind the eye, and at the time the image was taken, you can see the fangs imbedded at the front of the eyes (ew!)

If anything, that spider looks more 'robotic' than the victim.

No argument on killed bee but I did Not adjust to get the metallic look... it genuinely looked like that in the raw photo, au.
what do you think got my attention so?

I have never intentionally torn apart a bee to see the inner workings (and am certainly no entomologist) but this one just doesn't look normal to me.
I'm old, maybe my eyes have gone weird.

Will have to look up bee-mimic fly... this one was full bee size

Love the photo you have... Golden orb weaver? Actually just like photographing spiders!
If you're interested, there are a couple of more pics of this yellow spider and another like it. They are unusual here.

That's a real bee. The metal piece you have mistaken for his head is actually his helmet. I believe all worker bees are required to wear helmets now after the 9/11 attack.

Love these guys, got several around the house right now, try not to disturb them during yardwork. We call them "writing spiders" and as I writer I consider them a good omen.

Check back... I will try to get up more bug shots in a bit that should be linked in the first working one.

Beetles are one of my favs too... have some cool ones, even if I do say so myself.

You are not much of a insect observer, are you?

Insects DO LOOK LIKE ROBOTS. They have an external skeleton and all the joints are visible. You just noticed that because of the close-up photo. Please spend some more time observing the world around you instead of only paying attention to man-made inventions and gadjets.
