Should we go get it out and convert it to gold, Euros, or just keep it under the mattress for now? Or just stock up on MRE's and water and gas for the generator? Quoting: Anonymous Coward 492757See my response above. However, you are getting my advice for free, and advice is usually worth what you pay for it. All I can tell you is what I am doing, given my own set of circumstances. Where's the EVIDENCE, Jim? |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 294313I always believed that whomever it was who said "hope for the best and prepare for the worst" made a lot of sense. That's the best advice I can give you. Each of us -- if we actually believe in preparing for hard times -- will do whatever we do based on our evaluation of the situation and our capabilities to do what we think needs to be done. In many cases, these "capabilities" translates into having enough money to buy what we need; however, having a clear head and a good outlook is every bit as important as wealth right now. Quoting: Duncan KunzI have been debunking woo-woo crap from the first day I got here. Every time some bozo has said "the shit's gonna hit the fan", I asked for evidence as to why they think it will and never got an answer. Six months ago, I noticed some changes and bought a little mini-farm in Gila County, picking it because it was about an hour's drive from home, pretty remote, and had a good producing well. Three months ago I pretty much liquidated my 401(k) and paid my bills. This week I am moving a lot of my special belongings up to the cabin. My kids are ready to leave college and slide up for an "extended vacation" at a moment's notice. I eat woo-woos and conspiracy nuts for breakfast and I've been doing it for years. If I say that thre's a good possibility that the excrement is about to hit the air-handler, then either I'm as crazy as most of you or else I have managed to connect the dots that lots of you haven't. Quoting: IkaikaBecause they probably spend the best. for example it could buy you a gallon of gas, a box of .22 LR ammunition, a couple gallons of water, etc. Most Americans cannot accept the fact that the dollar will be worthless (at least, not any time soon). But I can' think of anyone right now who I could go up to and trade an ounce of gold for a Ruger 10/22, do you? Of course there are excellent alternate currencies, too, including the aforementined .22 LR ammunition, cigarettes, aspirin, oral antibiotics, and whiskey. You might want to diversify your wealth. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 419054You can't touch land in Pleasant Valley for less than a couple hundred thou, and I'd have to go through Globe and Roosevelt or else Payson and then up on the Mogollon Rim to get there. That's three hours minimum as opposed to about an hour, given the improvements on Beeline Highway. That's why we didn't buy land around Show Low, which is a lot cooler than Gisela Valley. What makes you certain of this doom scenario? Quoting: Anonymous Coward 294313I am not certain of anything. Of course, I used to know it all when I was in my twenties, but over the past foty years I must've gotten dumber and dumber. I am concerned enough to prepare for some serious stuff because of our running out of exploitable petroleum products (in the long run) and the fact that we could slide into a depression (in the short run). I'm on the verge of getting a generous pension from my empolyer as well as social security from Uncle Pig. This could very well go away, and I would have to continue working some of my other jobs -- and my wife will have to continue her job as an RN -- to keep things going. With a situation like that, it seems pretty obvious that the less I am tied to things like grocery and utility bills, the better off my family and I will be. Where's the EVIDENCE, Jim? |
