Blockade- Declaring War User ID: 439828 New Zealand 07/23/2008 12:21 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | US, UK, France launch sea exercise for naval blockade on Iran Quoting: Anonymous Coward 437919DEBKAfile’s military sources report that Operational Brimstone, starting Monday, July 21, aimed at giving military teeth to the two-week ultimatum the six world powers gave Iran in Geneva Saturday to accept the suspension of uranium enrichment or face harsh sanctions and isolation. Operation Brimstone, it sound like these lunatic countries want to start Operation Sodom & Gomorrah Firestorm After warning of punitive measures against Iran, Condoleezza Rice met the six members of the Gulf Cooperation Council plus Egypt, Jordan and Iraq in Abu Dhabi. First she was briefed by Under Secretary of State William Burns. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 437919That stupid gapped-toothed bitch has shit for brains. Iran has repeatly said that any nation that blockades them, is considered to have declared war agaist Iran. The penalty of withholding refined oil products from Iran would be exercised by means of a partial international naval blockade of its Gulf ports. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 437919The exercise is scheduled to end July 31, two days before the US-European ultimatum to Iran expires. Immediately after the Geneva talks ended in failure, the US State Department issued a statement giving Tehran the option of “cooperation or confrontation.” A partial blockade of Iran’s shores, a key element of the new sanctions, would be limited to withholding from Iran supplies of benzene and other refined oil products - not foodstuffs or other commodities. Short of refining capacity, Iran has to import 40 percent of its benzene consumption and will be forced to react to the stoppage. New Congressional Resolution Declaring War with Iran? [link to www.niacouncil.org] Jun 24, 2008 Washington, DC — A House resolution effectively requiring a naval blockade on Iran seems fast tracked for passage, gaining co-sponsors at a remarkable speed, but experts say the measures called for in the resolutions amount to an act of war. H.CON.RES 362 calls on the president to stop all shipments of refined petroleum products from reaching Iran. It also “demands” that the President impose “stringent inspection requirements on all persons, vehicles, ships, planes, trains and cargo entering or departing Iran.” Analysts say that this would require a US naval blockade in the Strait of Hormuz. Congressional insiders credit America’s powerful pro-Israel lobby for the rapid endorsement of the bills. The American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) held its annual policy conference June 2-4, in which it sent thousands of members to Capitol Hill to push for tougher measures against Iran. On its website, AIPAC endorses the resolutions as a way to “stop Iran’s nuclear program” and tells readers to lobby Congress to pass the bill. These resolutions could severely escalate US-Iran tensions, experts say. Recalling the perception of the naval blockade of Cuba during the Cuban Missile Crisis, and the international norms classifying a naval blockade an act of war, critics argue endorsement of these bills would signal US intentions of war with Iran. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 439828 New Zealand 07/23/2008 01:15 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | -------------------------------------- Senior Israeli official: If nuclear talks fail, Bush will order Iran attack between November and January July 19, 2008 [link to www.debka.com] This assessment was reported by Israeli national radio Saturday overnight quoting a high-placed “security-political” official. The source predicted that President George W. Bush would order Iran attacked between the November 4 presidential election and his exit from the White House in January. The quote was aired shortly after the six-power talks with Iran in Geneva – with US official participation for the first time – failed, and just before Israel chief of staff Lt. Gen. Gabi Ashkenazi set out for Washington. He is to spend a week there as guest of Adm. Mike Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. The official was also giving Israel’s answer to the latest evaluations making the rounds in Washington that the Israeli Air Force does not have enough warplanes to strike Iran’s nuclear sites without American military support. A signal that the presence at the Geneva talks Saturday, July 19, of Under Secretary of State William Burns, far from being a concession, was an implicit ultimatum. Tehran was being told that no more than three months remained for it to suspend uranium enrichment before Bush made good on his pledge to resolve the issue before he left the White House. No member of the Bush administration is saying this directly, whether Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, Defense Secretary Robert Gates or the president himself. Israel will not doubt be rebuked for its disclosure. As a high-risk step to derail the accommodations Washington and Tehran are on the way to reaching in their secret talks on a wide range of issues, with the exception of the nuclear controversy, as revealed by DEBKA-Net-Weekly and DEBKAfile. Israel fears being abandoned and left out in the cold on all its fronts against Iran by these accommodations. Tehran may well seize on the Israeli disclosure as a pretext to ditch the nuclear negotiations on all levels, unless all six powers offer guarantees against their pursuit of military initiatives. |

[link to imra.org.il] Monday, July 21, 2008 Excerpts: Iran changes tone on Israelis, Americans. TEHRAN - Iran is "friends with the Israeli people," a deputy of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said, in stark contrast to Tehran's usual verbal assaults against the Jewish state, local media reported on 20 July. Esfandiar Rahim Mashaie, vice president in charge of tourism and one of Ahmadinejad's closest confidants, also described the people of Iran's arch-enemy the United States as "one of the best nations in the world." "Today, Iran is friends with the American and Israeli people. No nation in the world is our enemy, this is an honor," Rahim Mashaie said, according to the Fars news agency and Etemad newspaper. "We regard the American people as one of the best nations in the world. "Rahim Mashaie is one of the figures closest to the president in the Iranian government. This was emphasized earlier this year when his daughter married Ahmadinejad's son. |

User ID: 357079 United States 07/23/2008 09:36 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | they are going to force the hand of Iran Quoting: Grizzled Old GoatIran will cave!!! Bingo! That's the most ridiculous opinion anyone could possibly provide on this topic. Just what exactly is it that you think will influence Iran to surrender its position to America, effectively throwing away something it could have had simply by ignoring USA's demands and continuing its nuclear research and operations? And let's move beyond the rhetoric and not claim Iran is afraid the US will attack and annihilate it. America is just as afraid of Iran and its allies as they are of it. It's not all about conventional superiority and numbers, it hasn't been for a very long time. The development of asymmetric warfare birthed an era ensuring MAD between even a superpower and moderate power, so long as the moderate power understands asymmetric tactics and properly employs them. Especially if said moderate power is backed by other moderate powers and/or top-tier (super) powers. Besides, if America was so cocky as to attack Iran and open up that box, it would have already struck, or at very least wouldn't have sent the fifth fleet running when Iran began its exercises in the gulf. Furthermore, that nuclear activity could someday provide it with the same security rival countries possess - a nuclear deterrent. That advantage is priceless and well worth the threat of further sanctions or possible direct military conflict. Also, Iran can't logically just surrender. If it does that so as to avert further conflict, then it's likely it will have to do so again in the future, and then again, and that trend will continue until finally Iran isn't willing to surrender a position. In which case, if war is inevitable, then it might as well maintain what ground it can and not make undue sacrifices. Lastly, there's not actual evidence that Iran is pursuing the bomb. All legitimate intelligence and analysis shows negative. It is thus-far unproven as there isn't sufficient evidence to warrant the claims. That being said, USA is demanding Iran surrender a position which isn't sure to be anything other than a legitimate, peaceful endeavor. You can't expect Iran to allow the United States to dictate what peaceful activities it be allowed to undergo. It would be absurd for Iran to "cave." AIM:kits56fa2 |
