As I now understand it, the Civil War wasn't actually fought specifically over slavery, but rather over individual state rights to secede from the union and that once those states lost the war it was established that all states were prohibited from trying it again... which put an entirely new perspective on that war!

At least that's what I read in a Texas newspaper article from several years ago whose topic was the legality of "texit". I want to say the newspaper was in Fort Worth but I'm an old man and could be wrong!
