Because all these small towns along the path of totality for full eclipse are all small towns that are about to be swamped with 250,000 people who want to see it, and these small towns are not prepared for it.

They are expecting a lot of tourists coming. The schools are closing due to safety concerns because they don't want the kids to go blind by looking up at it while they're at school. The eclipse is expected to occur during the time when kids would normally be getting picked up at school by their parents.
