As cool as snakes are, I'd pass on having one as a pet simply because of how mind-blowingly dumb they are. While some reptiles can be trained and form genuine emotional bonds with their human caretakers, snakes are essentially biological robots driven by hunger. Any animal that regularly tries to eat its own tail, swallow porcupines, attack its predators instead of fleeing, and prioritize mating over eating to the point that they breed themselves to death is not something that should be kept as a pet. I struggle to understand why the ancient peoples used the idiom "as wise as serpents" unless that expression was actually a veiled insult.
