Colloidal Silver / Silver Ions / Electrically Isolated Silver - How Does It Work?
How Does It Work?

We are not going to try to second-guess the FDA's rules and restrictions on this issue and what we can and cannot say. We will simply quote from the work performed by others at The Silver Institute, which is a nonprofit international association that draws its membership from across the breadth of the silver industry. Established in 1971, the Institute serves as the industrys voice in increasing public understanding of the many uses and values of silver.

Colloidal silver works as a catalyst. A catalyst is best described as a substance that brings about (causes) a reaction or occurrence, without itself participating or being consumed.
Richard Davies and Samuel Etris of The Silver Institute, in a 1996 monograph entitled "The Development and Functions of Silver in Water Purification and Disease Control", discuss three mechanisms of deactivation that silver utilizes to incapacitate disease causing organisms. They are:

1) Catalytic Oxidation

Silver, in its atomic state, has the capacity to absorb oxygen and act as a catalyst to bring about oxidation. Atomic (nascent) oxygen absorbed onto the surface of silver ions in solution will readily react with the sulfhydryl (-S-H) groups surrounding the surface of bacteria or viruses to remove the hydrogen atoms (as water), causing the sulfur atoms to form an R-S-S-R bond; blocking respiration and causing the bacteria to expire. Employing a simple catalytic reduction/oxidation reaction, colloidal silver will react with any negative charge presented by the organism's transport or membrane proteins and deactivate them.

2) Reaction with Bacterial Cell Membranes

There is evidence that silver ions attach to membrane surface radicals of bacteria, impairing cell respiration and blocking its energy transfer system. One explanation is based on the nature of enzyme construction: Specific enzymes are required for a given biochemical activity to take place. Enzyme molecules usually require a specific metallic atom as part of the molecular matrix in order to function. A metal of higher valance can replace a metal of lower valance in the enzyme complex, preventing the enzyme from functioning normally. Silver, with a valance of plus 2, can replace many metals with a lower, or equal valance that exhibit weaker atomic bonding properties.

3) Binding with DNA

Studies by C.L. Fox and S.M. Modak with Pseudomonas aeruginosa, a tenacious bacteria that is difficult to treat, demonstrated that as much as 12% of silver is taken up by the organism's DNA. While it remains unclear exactly how the silver binds to the DNA without destroying the hydrogen bonds holding the lattice together, it nevertheless prevents the DNA from unwinding, an essential step for cellular replication to occur.

Silver helps rebuild tissue

The mechanism by which silver ions help rebuild tissue has been studied for more than a decade by Robert O. Becker, M.D. of Becker Biomagnetics in New York.
Dr. Becker initially reported his findings at the First International Conference on Silver and Gold in Medicine, co-sponsored by The Silver Institute in 1987. Since then, this technique has been used in clinical settings where hundreds of patients with various wounds have recovered. In addition, a laboratory study conducted by the US Army Institute for Surgical Research in Houston, Texas, showed that laboratory animals with burns treated under controlled conditions experienced shortened time for reconstruction with silver-nylon dressings.

Recovery of skin function was faster when electric current was applied compared to no application of electric current. Dr. Becker received a US patent for the devices, materials, and techniques involved in the regeneration of tissue using silver ions.

After several hundred cases, Dr. Becker believes that the technique works in three stages. The first stage is the chemical combination of highly active free silver ions with all bacteria or fungi present in the wound, which are inactivated within 20 to 30 minutes. The second stage occurs over the next few days. Silver acts on fibroblast cells to cause them to revert to their embryonic state, becoming stem cells. These cells are universal building blocks whose role is to reconstruct new tissue. In the final stage, silver ions form a complex with the living cells in the wound area to produce immediately convertible stem cells. The end result of this conversion is that the stem cells supply all the building blocks necessary to completely restore all anatomical structures.

Additional research by Dr. Becker indicated that during laboratory tests he conducted, cancer cells reverted to normal (not killed, but returned to normal). Other observations he and others have made are a correlation between silver deficiency and illness, proper immune system functioning, soft tissue and bone repair acceleration, the formation of cells that appear to be able to repair virtually any part of the body, reduction of inflammation, antimicrobial, antifungal, antibiotic properties, etc. All of these observations are yet to be fully understood.
Patients have found relief from staph, strep, prostate and sinus infections, as well as laryngitis and sore throats, when treated with colloidal silver, says Debra Brammer, N.D., a naturopathic physician and faculty member at Seattle-based Bastyr University. Though few medical professionals are familiar with colloidal silver, no one disputes the need for an alternative to traditional antibiotics. Its proponents cite decades of word of mouth supporting its effectiveness, as well as published clinical studies in Europe and Australia.

No other known treatment provides sufficient numbers of the embryonic or stem cells required for true regeneration of damaged or destroyed tissues in human and animals. The success indicates that there is the potential not only for the healing of near-surface wounds, but also for regenerative repair of internal organs such as the heart, liver, brain, and the spinal cord.

Colloidal Silver References

1) The FDA has stated that because colloidal silver has been in used for over 60 years (prior to 1938), it may continue to be marketed (Sept. 13, 1991, letter from consumer safety officer, Harold Davis, U.S. Food and Drug Administration). Additionally, the FDA has no jurisdiction over a pure, mineral element. However, the FDA restricts what can and cannot be said about colloidal silver and no claims can be made about its properties.

2) Dr. Robert Becker ïn The Body Electric recognizes a correlation between low levels of silver and sickness. He stated that the silver deficiency is responsible for the improper functioning of the immune system. Dr. Beckers research concluded that silver works on the full spectrum of pathogens without any side effects or damage to any cells of the body.

He also states that the silver was doing something more than killing disease-causing organisms. It was also causing major growth stimulation of injured tissue. Burn patients and even elderly patients noticed more rapid healing. And he discovered that all cancer cells change back to normal cells.

All strains of pathogens resistant to other antibiotics may be killed by colloidal silver.

3) Dr. W.J. Simpson, C.M.G., M.D., (Professor of Hygiene) Kings College, London, and Dr. R. Tanner Hewlefler, M.D., F.R.C.P. (Professor of Bacteriology) University of London, published an article in The Lancet, back in Dec. 1944. In essence, it said that the typhoid bacillus, which they were working on, was killed outright by the silver colloid solution.

4) Alfred Searle, founder of the pharmaceutical conglomerate, wrote in 1919: Applying colloidal silver to human subjects has been done in a large number of cases with astonishingly successful results. For internal administration, orally, or hypodermically, it has the advantage of being rapidly fatal to parasites without toxic action on its host. It is quite stable.

5) Colloidal Preparations of Silver in Pharmacy, British Medical Journal, February 1923. Pure silver is entirely non-irritant. In tests, at very high dilution rates it has been shown repeatedly that the rapid exerted disinfectant action is of considerable therapeutic value.

6) Alexander Tomasz, M.D. of the Rockefeller University of New York City, states: Common bacteria that cause pneumonia, childrens ear infections and many other diseases are evolving into forms untreatable by all known medicines, threatening a frightening post-antibiotic era that is a looming medical disaster.

7) Silver our mightiest Germ Fighter, Science Digest of March 1978. As an antibiotic, silver kills hundreds of disease-causing organisms, and resistant strains fail to develop. Silver is absolutely non-toxic and the best all round germ fighter that we have. Doctors are reporting that, taken internally, it works in cases of syphilis, cholera, malaria, diabetes and severe burns. Richard L. Davies, executive director of The Silver Institute, which monitors Silver technology in 37 countries, reports: In four years, weve described 87 important new medical uses for silver.

8) Dr. Bjorn Nordstrom, of the Karolinska Institute in Sweden, has used silver in his cancer cure method for many years. He says the whole thing is very simple. This brought rapid remission in patients given up by other doctors.

9) Rather than in a chemical compound, silver, in a colloidal state, may be applied in a much-concentrated form, with corresponding better results.

10) According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Poison Control Center, colloidal silver is considered harmless. Dr Samuel Etris, a senior consultant at The Silver Institute, reports that there has never been any allergic, toxic, or carcinogenic reaction to colloidal silver. The U.S. Government's Center for Disease Control confirmed that fact in 1995.

Electrically generated silver ions at <2 //g ml”1 concentration were shown to exhibit more efficient fungicidal properties than silver compounds such as silver sulfadiazine and silver nitrate. The growth of all fungal organisms was inhibited by silver concentration between 0-5 and 4-7 /¿g ml”1, and the fungicidal concentration of silver was as low as 1-9 /¿g ml-1 (Berger et al. 1976a). AgNPs exhibited considerable antifungal activity against C. albicans and Trichophyton mentagrophytes, the cause of fungal infections of the hair, skin and nails. The antimicrobial activity of silver was found to be comparable to Amphotericin B, one of the most powerful prescription antifungal drugs and superior to the well-known antifungal drug fluconazole (Kim et al. 2008a).

Many members of goldismoney2 had been making colloidal silver for years. They used various methods, and many had colloidal silver generators from multiple manufacturers.
Sadly, it is no more. The plug has been pulled. The good news is that I have been able to capture images of all 1000 posts on the thread. They are available for viewing at:

One example of this type of research is work undertaken at North Carolina State University under Assistant Professor Rohan Shirwaiker. His team has been developing an electrically-activated silver-based antimicrobial implant system. They have engineered the application of low intensity direct and alternating current mechanisms to a silver-titanium implant system to release silver ions that kill or neutralize bacteria on and around the implant. A small power circuitry that can be integrated into the implant design creates a potential difference between the implant's silver and titanium components. The conductive body fluids surrounding the device result in a small electrical current via the release of antimicrobial silver ions. Such a system can be utilized in implants for prophylaxis or treatment of device-associated infection. With the growing number of implant procedures, including total hip and knee joint arthroplasties, such innovations in silver-based antimicrobial technology can significantly improve patient outcomes while reducing medical expenditure.

Silver has also been shown to enhance antibiotic activity against certain gram-negative bacteria directly. In 2013 researchers from Boston published a paper that demonstrated that silver effectively sensitizes gram-negative bacteria to the gram-positive-specific antibiotic vancomycin, thus expanding the antibacterial spectrum of this drug. Using silver in combination with established antibiotics may significantly boost the ongoing fight to identify and develop new ways to fight infection. Another promising field of research is investigating how silver nanoparticles may be developed into healthcare solutions. One such example is the efforts of researchers in Canada and Sweden who are working to stabilize and incorporate silver nanoparticles into cornea replacements and contact lenses to take advantage of their antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties.

HOW DOES SILVER WORK?
In metallic (elemental) form, silver is unreactive and cannot kill bacteria. Silver atoms (denoted as Ag or Ag0) must lose an electron and become positively charged silver ions (Ag+) to become bactericidal. Elemental silver ionizes in the air but ionizes more readily when exposed to an aqueous environment such as wound exudate. In contrast, silver compounds contain positive silver ions bound to negatively charged ions or molecules. Some silver ions become detached from the compound when exposed to aqueous environments.
Silver ions are highly reactive and affect multiple sites within bacterial cells, ultimately causing bacterial cell death. They bind to bacterial cell membranes, disrupting the bacterial cell wall and cell leakage. Silver ions transported into the cell disrupt cell function by binding to proteins and interfering with energy production, enzyme function, and cell replication. Silver ions are active against many bacteria, fungi, and viruses, including many antibiotic-resistant bacteria, such as methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and vancomycin-resistant Enterococci (VRE).
Studies of the effects of silver dressings on experimental models of biofilms have
suggested that silver may reduce bacterial adhesion, destabilize the biofilm matrix, kill bacteria within the matrix, and increase the susceptibility of bacteria to antibiotics.
Some laboratory studies have suggested that silver may have beneficial effects on wound healing besides the control of bioburden alone. For example, silver nitrate, nanocrystalline silver, and some silver-containing dressings have been found to have anti-inflammatory effects and encourage blood vessel formation (neovascularization).
Only a small proportion of silver presented to a wound site in a dressing is involved in
antimicrobial action. Most of the rest remains within the dressing or binds to proteins in the
wound or wound debris. Very little is systemically absorbed.
Even if absorbed systemically, silver is excreted mainly via the biliary route in feces. Some is excreted in the urine. Silver is not absorbed into the central or peripheral nervous systems.
