I did a solo motorcycle trip through the North Island a few years ago. Pulled into a small town, got myself a room and headed to the nearest pub. Got to the bar and realized that everyone in the bar was Maori and some were checking me out, so I thought...oh shit, this could be a mistake. So a couple of huge guys with tattooed faces ingat a stand table motioned me over and say "hey, you don't look like your from around here, mate". I was thinking 'oh shit' again, and said 'right, I'm America, just doing a motorcycle trip through the countryside here' To which he replied: "Good, because we like it when foreigners and people who aren't local come in and have a beer with us. What're you drinking, mate? It's on us". I'll never forget that and a lot of other experiences I had with Maori people. But let me tell you, disrespect them or their culture and you'll have some bad assed mothefurkcers to deal with. |
