All modern restaurants hailed from inns with lodging for tired and hungry travelers for other villages. Bars and taverns originally served beer and booze almost exclusively.

In the past for one to eat their meals outside of the home would mean either of two things:

1. You are a traveler.
2. You live in a flop-house with no kitchen.
