Re: USGS on watch for extreme seismic activity on West Coast
Hey AC 156099 - thanks for makin me do my research! hf

Long Valley was formed 760,000 years ago when a huge volcanic eruption released very hot ash that later cooled to form the Bishop tuff that is common to the area. The eruption was so colossal that the magma chamber under the now completely destroyed volcano was significantly emptied to the point of collapse. The collapse itself caused an even larger secondary eruption of pyroclastic ash that burned and buried thousands of square miles.

Ash from this eruption blanketed much of the western part of what is now the United States.

Geologists call topographic depressions formed in this manner calderas.

If Long Valley Caldera blows (Mammoth), LA will be covered with more then ash. They will also be under water from the snow at Mammoth, and the Owens Valley resevoir, among others in the area). The San Juaquin Valley, one of the most productive AG valleys on the planet, will suffer the same fate. It will make Chile look like a tea party. Southern and Central Calif can survie a Fault slip, even an 8 (though damage and death would be massive). But if Long Valley blows, all bets are off.

So you're saying that housing prices in the LA area would come down some more from where they are then?

Re: USGS on watch for extreme seismic activity on West Coast
I just had a fight with my brother. I consider that an extreme
seismic activity. He changed the house around when I was gone
for two months. He drags me around, ordering me around. When I
refused to help him any further, he threatened to cut off access to the Internet. He may pay for the Internet, but, I have the right to express myself freely, right? He treats me like a child, saying I am acting childish when I want to express myself! It truly is an extinction level event.

It's my pleasure... Though to be honest, I rather not even think about Mammoth erupting - I've worked too damn hard to get our garden in! ;)

Oh-oo, starbattle, that's not very nice for you that your brother orders your around. Maybe you can think about your tactics, so you don't raise that sort of behavior in him.. Ouch. I feel sorry for you..
