The 103 P-wave from the huge China earthquake
goes right across the USA... as the 103 P-wave
from the large California eq [and all the other
recent eq swarms in CA/NV] went across China.

[link to neic.usgs.gov]
 Quoting: Is45

FWIW, there's no such thing as a "103 P-wave." The "103" refers to a measurement of distance (in degrees) from the epicenter. It only appears graphically as a sine wave due to mathematical modeling (or more specifically, the "spherically-symmetric IASP91 reference earth velocity model") of the propagation of the P-wave over/through the earth, a spherically-shaped object.

ANY information on what's happening in/around Mt. Ranier would be helpful, if anyone has anything solid (no pun intended) to speak of...

Thanks

 Quoting: OneAngryMom

If anything out of the ordinary was to happen in/around
Mt. Ranier words would be out within minutes as it is a very closely monitored volcano.
Had a chat with some people from the area and at the moment
things seems perfectly normal.

I'm w/ you on this...I was relocated by my company to southwest Washington mid-March. No sooner I come out here, the earthquake swarms start, and then the doom. I'm perfectly located within 50 miles or so from Mt Hood and Mt St Helens, and a little further from Mt Rainier.

I pretty much now have front row seats for the doom! I guess it's the best way of looking at it.

The best way, would be to get your company to RElocate you somewhere else...I know where you are...and I am no better off than you are...lots of water surrounding, and a measly 50ft above sea level there will be no escape for any of us, if this happens, and I truly believe it will..it's just a matter of time...the last 7.1 we had was terrible...scared the hell out of all of us...rr

The quakes in Reno have slowed signifigantly and even more so since the quake in China.

Here is helicorder pic from lastnight. This activity was not from this area but the pics are from a helicorder near Carson City, NV. Hurry before it updates itself too much and it disappears.

I guess I should have worded that differently - - - I was promoted into a territorial sales manager for the Pacific NW states and Alaska and, since I work primarily from a home office, was able to decide where I wanted to go. I actually was the devil who chose Doom Central. I love this place, honestly the most beautiful spot in the country. I can look out the window and see Mt Hood and the Columbia River Gorge for miles...but I didn't exactly have volcanic eruptions in my mind at the time.

I guess if its my time, what better way than smack dab in the center of it all! (Or so I keep convincing myself!)

Thanks - but to be honest, its not that great working from home. At least for me - I'm 29, single and I don't know anyone in this area. It doesn't give me the opportunity to have a medium to really meet people unless I want to be a dork and go to bars/clubs by myself (which the option is starting to seem viable).

Malpractice insurance. It's a great company without any of the corporate shit you'd expect. I almost gave it up to work for a humanitarian organization until I realized it was easier to be a doctor with no college education than to have any pay (and I didnt need much) working for a place like Amnesty Int'l or something unless I had 20+ years of experience behind my belt. Taking this job allowed me to remain with a great company and have the money to give to charities I respect. Its a consolation prize I guess, but my way of giving back since I can't the way I'd love to.

But again - working from home...no good!

Re: USGS on watch for extreme seismic activity on West Coast
Never thought of it that way. Be a dork then. Not really though, with practice you can fake it well. Eat or drink at the bar. Then keep moving as if with purpose even if not, making the rounds and waste no time. See somebody that's a maybe, then stop and say hello. If it's a no go, well, gotta go and keep moving... You can rely on others or you can appear strong and not in need of a wingman, even if you have to fake it, until it becomes real and easy. Gotta do what we gotta do. Good luck brother, you'll be fine.

Re: USGS on watch for extreme seismic activity on West Coast

ScienceDaily (Apr. 14, 2008) — Scientists at Oregon State University’s Hatfield Marine Science Center have recorded more than 600 earthquakes in the last 10 days off the central Oregon coast in an area not typically known for a high degree of seismic activity.

This earthquake “swarm” is unique, according to OSU marine geologist Robert Dziak, because it is occurring within the middle of the Juan de Fuca plate – away from the major, regional tectonic boundaries.

“In the 17 years we’ve been monitoring the ocean through hydrophone recordings, we’ve never seen a swarm of earthquakes in an area such as this,” Dziak said. “We’re not certain what it means. But we hope to have a ship divert to the site and take some water samples that may help us learn more.” The water samples may indicate whether the process causing the earthquakes is tectonic or hydrothermal, he added.

In 2004 they discovered a "sink" vis.
quote
ScienceDaily (Jul. 15, 2004) — CORVALLIS, Ore. – The gradual subduction of the Juan de Fuca plate beneath the North American plate puts tremendous stress on the seafloor, creating cracks and fissures, hydrothermal vents, seafloor spreading, and literally hundreds of small earthquakes on a near-daily basis.

Now a North American team of scientists has documented for the first time a new phenomenon – the creation of a void in the seafloor that draws in – rather than expels – surrounding seawater.

They report their discovery in the July 15 issue of the journal Nature.

GLP effect huh?

I will NOT get a new job that is everything I could have hoped for and a bag of chips that will pay me enough to pay back bills and save for escaping CA.
I will NOT get such a dream job that they will have to shoo me away every evening and remind me to go home...

Of course, if disaster strikes, they will need more morticians.

Re: USGS on watch for extreme seismic activity on West Coast
The San Onofre plant sits on a plot of land under which the major fault wonders out to see and goes offshore directly under the plant. It then zags back onto the shore just a touch north of San Diego and continues south past Baja California and then goes out to sea one last time somewhere in Northern Mexico. If we get a 9.0 in or near Reno and the SLO or SAN ONOFRE plants go the golden state will be glowing green for a thousand years or so...

If this is really true, then the USGS and FEMA could be held liable for any deaths from a resulting quake. I hardly think this is the case, and I am not trying to debunk this.

I agree... and there are some big military bases on the West Coast. I have military family members there who I know aren't going anywhere.

There are also two nuke plants. One at San Luis Obispo, and one in San Onofre
