My cat died today and I am devastated

"I’ve posted about my cat on here before, but my cat died today and I am so devastated.

In short, my cat was sick about 2.5 weeks ago. I took him to the vet, they did some scans and found a mass. They did an exploratory surgery that week and got samples from the mass and other lymphnodes. Basically it came back as an adenocarcinoma. He is only 4 yrs old so this aggressive cancer is pretty rare in cats as young as him.

It took about a week for the results to come back and maybe 5 days or so to get his surgery to remove the mass. During the surgery, they found that his cancer tumor adhered to his small intestine and they told me they would have to cut it. Then maybe less than an hour later they call me again and tell me he threw a blood clot, which they did not expect. Despite this, my vet was fairly optimistic that he would pull thru. When he woke up, he was walking around his cage, stretching etc. Then, a couple of hours later, he just got bad so quickly and threw another clot, which left him brain dead and paralyzed. I knew we would have to put him down, but then as I was literally 2 min from the vet, he threw more blood clots and then died. I was devastated that I couldn’t say goodbye while he was still breathing. I just wanted to see his beautiful green eyes once more before he went to sleep forever.

I am devastated. I thought the surgery would work and he would recover since he is so young. But, these past couple of days leading up to the surgery, he wasn’t eating and he was pretty lethargic, but still very affectionate and purring. He would always get up to greet me. I was hopeful. This morning I held him and he was much lighter but still him. He was so smol. Before they took him back for surgery, I kissed his head and told him I loved him. I keep replaying that in my mind over and over. I did get to mourn him and see him but only after he passed. It was so surreal, seeing him no longer himself. His eyes were no longer the beautiful green I loved so much, and he was just gone. Saying goodbye to him was one of the hardest things I have ever had to do in my life.

I can’t believe he is gone. He was my emotional support animal, my baby, my buddy, and now he’s gone. It just isn’t fucking fair. I wish animal medicine was further along. I wish the surgery worked, and I wish he was alive right now. I feel like no one really understands the devastation and pain and loss I feel right now, besides my sister who loved him just as much as I did."
