Unless you drive the entire U.S. constantly, wreck your car, or got a lemon, it should be in pretty good shape in three years. Cars now are ugly af. What is the point of getting another one any more? |

Benefits dont add up. He has masters in elctrical engineering The actor and comedian behind the popular Mr. Bean character has called on drivers to hold off buying an electric vehicle (EV), saying the environmental benefits do not stack up. Quoting: Coastie Patriot Rowan Atkinson, a long-time motor enthusiast with a degree and master’s in electrical engineering, said current EV technology was more harmful to the environment than it was worth. “Increasingly, I’m feeling that our honeymoon with electric cars is coming to an end, and that’s no bad thing: we’re realising that a wider range of options need to be explored if we’re going to properly address the very serious environmental problems that our use of the motor car has created,” Atkinson wrote in The Guardian newspaper. He pointed to figures released by automotive giant Volvo revealing that greenhouse gas emissions during the EV production process were 70 percent higher than building a petrol car. “How so?” Atkinson said. “The problem lies with the lithium-ion batteries fitted currently to nearly all-electric vehicles: they’re absurdly heavy, huge amounts of energy are required to make them, and they are estimated to last only upwards of 10 years. He also pointed to current efforts to develop newer technologies, like solid-state batteries, hydrogen fuel cells, and synthetic fuels, but noted more time was needed before they became mainstream. Atkinson said a bigger problem beyond technology was the current three-year leasing model for car ownership, where owners move onto a new car at the end of the timeframe. “This seems an outrageously profligate use of the world’s natural resources when you consider what great condition a three-year-old car is in,” Atkinson said, saying owners could just learn to use their cars for longer instead, effectively lowering demand for new vehicles. But they need to figure out how hydrogen will be safely stored in a car (especially when the vehicle is involved in an accident), how to produce an efficient AND inexpensive fuel cell, along with the infrastructure to provide hydrogen on demand. He has masters in elctrical engineering He pointed to figures released by automotive giant Volvo revealing that greenhouse gas emissions during the EV production process were 70 percent higher than building a petrol car. Quoting: Coastie Patriot According to these Sierra club hippies, it takes about 260 gallons of fuel to produce a regular car, 325 for a hybrid. So let's say 70% more for a full EV from that 260 puts you at 442 gallons of gas energy equivalent to make the car. 182 gallons of gas is pretty easy to save with the efficiency of an electric car over 10 years... probably would save that over 6 months if you drive a lot. Currently, 26% of the grid in the northeast is either nuclear or wind/solar/hydro/biomass. Most of the rest is natural gas, which is way cleaner that gasoline. EV cars work, Mr. Bean is retarded or a shill. |

We even have these refueling stations across the country that can pump liquid fuel. An electric steam turbine powered by peroxide could replace batteries and be refuelable. He has masters in elctrical engineering THE ANSWER: Quoting: Anonymous Coward 85942921 Nothing wrong with an EV in concept, but supporting day to day operation of the SOB is where the issues start. Solar Cell technology is the answer to EVs. We need solar panels that are capable of charging the thing automatically, while driving and parked. Incorporate that into an EV, I’ll buy one that very instant!! Locomotion is very energy intensive. EV batteries tend to be 60 KW-HR or larger. TO fully charge such a battery from current solar tech would require a 12K array.-This is around 32 3x5 panels with current tech. Current panels convert about 25% of the energy hitting them to electric power. If you could make them 100% efficient - you would still need 8 of those imaginary panels to keep a charge full charge and only if they were in full sun all day long. And those are the "summer" numbers. Way worse in the winter The hybrid engines are a good idea - but 100% EV makes no sense. The bettery tech just isn't good enough. We need something 50% lighter for the same power density and which doesn't wear out after 10-15 years, and which can be charged in freezing temps ( lithium chemistries CANNOT be safely chaged when below freezing) The is a new Sodium chemistry that China is releasing in EVs this year and that will help - Sodium is far easier to come by than Lithium and battery costs are expected to be 1/2 what they are for equivalent performance ( I have yet to see any commercial offering - I want them for my Solar array.. ) That’s why I say, massive amount of research and development into solar technology. PV cells have made pretty good advancements in recent years, but I’m not convinced the technology has evolved to its full potential yet, nowhere near. Researchers have already developed a Solar Power Paint that can produce current in good sun. Maybe start there, and bring it forward. |

If stored properly, they have a shelf life of 10 years, but during normal use they might go 5 tops, and that's if you're really taking care of them. Parking them in the summer sun for eight hours a day...nope. Charging them past 80% on a regular basis...nope. Discharging past 50% on a regular basis...nope. The way most people use batteries they would probably last 2 years. They are incredibly convenient though. And the zero noise and zero emissions is going to be really really nice for metropolitan areas. I'm really looking forward to sitting in my local park without the downtown traffic noise. |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 84100021 The batteries are seriously toxic Because there is now many many videos of EV burning infernos on Youtube. Cars , Busses, scooters etc. in use and charging. In a simialr vein, handheld wireless devices ie radios phones etc. Back in the early eighties in the venerable trade journal Wireless World, (formerly Marconi Magazine), EEs and radio technicians were warning of brain cancer from exposure to RF fields, the marketing droids in the radio companies pooh pooed this. The initial worry was hand held walky-talky radios, then mobile phones. Move forward a few decades and the number confirm the worries of the techs who had been working on Rf systems in labs and the field since 1920.. |
