When the Magnetic poles flip all satellite communication will go down and so to will the power grid. They know this. That's why they're getting ready for the reversal. A complete magnetic reversal will leave earth vulnerable to the slightest proton event, If a Carington event were to occur during a pole reversal the effects would no doubt be devastating.
