Soul, spirit, mind, consciousness are descriptions of what our bodies, brains, and senses can do for us. No body, no brain, no senses--no soul, no spirit, no mind, and no consciousness.

Ignoring the modern new age movements, Theosophy (per AE Powell summaries) explains a lot about the soul, clearly and systematically. At the least, it's a good starting point.

But keep in mind, our souls evolve and therefore not all humans souls are at the same level of development/age. Those differences are reflected both in how the level of consciousness and the form of the soul varies from person to person.

For example, Theosophy explains people (Hollywood types) don't/can't actually sell their soul, it's not their's to sell. However, they can sellout their soul though. This means, in overly simple terms, they voluntarily allow the connection to their soul to be broken and redirected to another entity. At the physical level (mind/subconscious/body), nothing seems different and they are rewarded with material gains. But the consequence is they drop out of the scheme of human evolution. A large price to pay for a single (usually shortened) life of comfort.

And regarding the scheme of human evolution, Rumi, a 13th century Islamic poet, had this to say:

“I died from the mineral, and became a plant; I died from the plant, and reappeared in an animal; I died from the animal, and became a man; Wherefore then should I fear? When did I grow less by dying? Next time I shall die from the man, that I may grow the wings of the angel. Once more shall I wing my way above the angels; I shall become that which entereth not the imagination.”

The "Mind" is to the "Soul" what the "Brain" is to the "Body"

When the body dies so does the brain but the soul and mind survive.

The body needs the soul in order to function/live just like the brain needs the mind in order to function/think/etc..

Also, the "Spirit" is what connects both, the body and the brain, to the soul and mind.

For the believers out there: In order to 'be with God' after death you must have the "Holy Spirit" which will bind to your eternal spiritual body thus allowing you access to 'Heaven' and God. Without the Holy Spirit your spiritual body will not have access to the higher realm(s) of God and you will be separated for eternity from God (that's where the 'suffering' for eternity comes in - being separated from God.)
