Found out Dad was a 3rd Degree Free Mason - What does that mean exactly?
SO Dad passed away 4 years ago. My Step Mom provides me a bin of stuff and in it is a black plastic like case. I don't believe she ever opened it up before, as she never seemed to be interested in his things.

My Grandfather I do know was in the Free Mason. My Dad had told me so, but I never did see anything that would lead me to believe that.

I went into this large black pouch bag and I found a document in scroll/left side in English and the right side I believe is in Latin? IT states that my Father advanced from 2nd Degree to 3rd Degree with the dates and his signature on the side of this form, not on the bottom. I found that it was signed during the time my Mom would have been about 5 months pregnant with me.

Also in this bag was something at first to me looked like one of those graduation caps, but blue and white in colour.. but when I opened this thing up, I am not sure what it actually is. It has tassels on either side, a square piece attached to another piece and when I lift the cap like part of this flag/thing my Dads name is signed on it again.

He never talked about it ever. My Mom said she never knew that my Dad was in it. When I asked my Step Mom she said she never asked him where or what he did.

My question. What does it all mean? Third Degree Mason I understand based on google terms.. but was he like eating Babies? Was he doing good? I know him to have always been a knowledge seeker and truth seeker. He did not like anything really about the government and he definitely thought for himself.

I guess I am just wondering what the initiative was and what he had to do to stay in it. If they would have any more records of him that would help me understand clearly a part of him I had no idea about before he passed.

I'm a master mason from the state of Texas. The hat sounds like it came from one of the appendant bodies either Scottish rite or York Rite. Contact Brother Carlos Hernandez in Illinois, he operates ascended masters clothing, as well as Masonic regalia and antiques for auction. You can find him on Facebook under the name Carl Hern. Tell him Wayne sent you :) he should be able to identify any Masonic artifacts you find of your father's.

All the masons i ever met were married with a house and kids.
Yours sounds like he was investing in your future and satisfying his metaphysics curiosity at the same time.

It means he was a full member in good standing at his lodge and understood their precepts.

You have been deceived with this other bunch. They do not have kids and hallmark is the most disgusting orgies and satanism imaginable.

yes, basically.

I had a relative who died and in his obituary it said he was a 33rd degree Mason. I had no fucking idea, I hadn't seen or talked to him since I was a little kid but had no clue until I read the obituary.

They learn stuff from the Bible according to their (Masonic) interpretations.

They ask them to donate to charity for children's hospitals and similar works.
They believe they are working to do good.

Take the dudes advise, take the stuff to the dude and go find out.

Or take photos of the artifacts, and we can just check, their stuff ain't so hidden, so, either take the bib to the lodge or post a pic, I'll probably be able to find out quite easily

He went through the first 3 degrees, which are Entered Apprentice, Fellowcraft, and then Master Mason. These 3 degrees are the first, and make you a full fledged member of the lodge. He would be considered a Master Mason. These degrees are sometimes referred to as the Blue Lodge. Depending on the Lodge, the process of going through these degrees can take a few months' time.

From there, he would have the option of going through either the York Rite or the Scottish Rite for additional degree work, and then he could become a Shriner thereafter.

Any Mason that becomes a Shriner has to go through the 3 Blue Lodge degrees first. The first 3 degrees are the initial degrees that need to be completed before advancing to the other degrees.

It is even said that the Master Mason degree is as high as you can go, and that the additional degrees are just more "light" or knowledge.

Re: Found out Dad was a 3rd Degree Free Mason - What does that mean exactly?
My dad, who has also passed, was also in the mason's. He was also a shriner so he must have at least been a master mason. I don't think he was in the masons much longer then a couple of years.

That low of level doesn't mean much. They are just getting started. The freaky stuff doesn't come out until you achieve the higher levels...or at least that is how I understand it.

My dad's brothers were more into it and introduced him to the gang. In the end (and really their whole lives) the brothers never really got along all that well...so I am certain my dad was just going through the motions.

Still not something I am fond of knowing.

thing is - would masons know anything at all - they could not be masons - cause knowledge would make associations to preconceived notions an impossibility.

Also, the hat you found might be a fez hat which is worn by the Shriners. It is usually burgundy in color with a black tassel that drapes from the top of the hat to the side of the fez. I am guessing - without seeing the hat in pictures - that he was a Shriner.

This makes sense. I was trying to see images on google of the thing I was calling like cap or something. But when I see images it is definitely a type of Apron. It says in the script that he advanced from 2nd to 3rd and from what I am reading up on it, what you are saying makes sense. I don't know if he chose to go further than that, this was all that was left for me. It is the Georgina Lodge, in Ontario Canada. I just find the whole thing interesting as it was not something I was aware he was a part of. However considering he was a Scout as a kid and then a Rover, I can see him maybe wanting to persue it as far as being a Shriner member.

I remember my grandfather having a pinky ring, gold with a black stone square shape on top with the mason symbol on top of it. Not sure what happened to it or to what degree my grandfather was involved. Just find the whole thing interesting.

Thanks for the insight!
