i think there's more to this story than the eye meets

30 million dollar of unpaid loans, are you fucking kidding me, that's peanuts, have you forgotten how the USA tryed a color revolution in that same country months ago which Russia squished within a day or so?!

this is probably just propaganda and the Kazak Government is doing this on the orders of America, but they know they can't push this forever
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 78317455

Why doesn’t Russia just make their payments then?

Problem solved.

Maybe they're going to stiff the j bankers and when the world dumps the soon to be no longer Petro backed federal reserve Note Russian commodity money will be doing just fine.

Just like the real dollar aka the silver American eagle coins.

The real money of the USA REPUBLIC.

Kazakhstan has taken control of Russian assets on Baikonur spaceport, local KZ24 media reported on March 7, citing the country’s court bailiff service. The property belongs to TsENKI Center for Operation of Space Ground-based Infrastructure, a subsidiary of Russia’s Roscosmos State Corp.

So you’re thinking that Putin will take the gloves off and threaten Kazakhstan with nukes unless they forgive Russia’s debt and delinquent payments?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 81936090

in 1994 Russia signed the Budapest Memorandum in which Russia agreed that they would not threaten or attack three countries: Ukraine, Belarus, and Kazakhstan. obviously Russia has broken this agreement and threatened or attacked all three countries.

USA and UK also signed the Budapest Memorandum, and agreed to help Ukraine and the other countries if they are attacked.

so that is the current situation, Russia broke the agreement and USA and UK are following the agreement.

Re: IS RUSSIA GOING BROKE? Kazakhstan Seizes Russia's Launch Facility at Baikonur Because Russia Can’t Pay Its Debts
On March 7th, 2023, Kazakhstan seized control of the Biaterek launch complex at the Baikonur Cosmodrome – Russia’s main launch site since 1955. According to statements by KZ24 News and The Moscow Times, the Kakazh government has impounded Russian assets at the Center for Utilization of Ground-based Space Infrastructure (TsENKI), a subsidiary of Roscosmos. It is also preventing Russian officials from leaving the country or liquidating Roscosmos assets. This incident is another example of how Russia’s space program is suffering collateral damage from the war in Ukraine.

The decision was made because the Russian State company failed to pay its debts to the Kazakh government, which are now over 13.5 billion tenges (2.258 billion rubles; $29.7 million). This debt is part of the “Baiterek” program, a Kazakh-Russian joint venture related to the development of the Soyuz-5 booster. This program was created in 2005 to speed the transition from launch vehicles that rely on highly-toxic unsymmetric dimethylhydrazine (UDMH) – aka. “heptyl” fuel (C2H8N2) – and adopting ecologically safe propellants and launch practices.

Russia has less debt than any other nation on Earth.

Go look it up.

They story is bunk and ignores Russia occupies the site and has done so for 3 years now and actually conducted a military operation there to get rid of the "State Actors of other nations"

The story is pure propaganda.

Could be the end of Russia’s new Soyuz 5 rocket program.

Russia has already spent nearly $1 billion on the development of the new Soyuz-5 rocket and plans for its launch site and ground services. When Ars wrote about the rocket's development in 2017, it was slated to debut in 2021. Now it is unlikely to debut before at least 2024—and given the current dispute with Kazakhstan, it likely will be delayed much longer into the future.

Fact is, for most Russians, it’s bordering on third world shithole status.

More than 11 million live below the poverty level as defined by making less than about US$200 per month.

22.6% of Russians do not have indoor plumbing. In rural Russia, almost 2/3 have no access to indoor toilets, 48.1% use outhouses and 18.4% do not have a sewage system, according to the Russian State Statistics Agency Rosstat
