If you meat someone with Downs Syndrome, you know they have Downs. They all look alike. The autism spectrum is a spectrum like a color wheel, not a line. All "high functioning" share some traits but are very different. One may avoid eye contact, another may use too much- just one example. Plus females are able to mask very effectively, especially as they age. I had to train myself to look people in the eyes during conversations. It's still hard. And I was abused by parents who were not blood relatives. They had no understanding of how I perceived the world. Or my stimming. Or my spending hours with the phone book or maps. I was from a generation where you just had to deal. And I was seriously disciplined to stop behavior they felt was not the norm. I spent most of my childhood alone in my room.
