When they learn how to stand in line, it's teaching how to keep your hands to yourself, how to take turns, how to show respect for others, how to sacrifice your wants for someone else, etc. All these things should be taught at home, but they are not being taught at home, so guess who gets to do it. This isn't about teaching kids how to conform and become bots in the corporate machine. This is basic good manners. If they can't manage basic good manners standing in a line outside their library classroom, then how are they going to be civilized adults who have to take turns waiting for the bank teller to get to them, or give up a parking space for someone who needs it more? If you're riled about basic good manners, then what you really want is mayhem and a complete lack of concern for others around you. Thank you for all three of your reasoned responses. I homeschooled my kid to avoid common core math, but she is now in an amazing public high school. Fantastic teachers, no funny business, and no tolerance for the things others are complaining about in this thread. The whiners here either don't actually have kids in schools (always the ones telling everyone to homeschool, like it's not a big life-changing deal), or they live in bad districts. Get away from crap schools. Either homeschool yourself, or move, or figure out something. Stay involved with your kids' lives at every step. If you can't change the situation in your district – do something else. That's what we did. It's hard, but better than sitting online whining about it.
