Happy vernal equinox for 2023.
This is the day when the sun rises directly east and sets directly west as viewed from any place on the earth.

Have a look at the Earth's terminator for today:

Set date to March 20, 2023 at 12:00 GMT:
Note how the shadow of the earth is a straight line, north to south, on a projection map.
These times of sunrise and sunset are verified by eyewitnesses with clocks.

Now turn the date to June 21, 2023 12:00 GMT and see what the shape of the shadow is.
Note how it is like a sine wave with the widest daylight section at the north pole and the smallest daylight section at the south pole.
