You guys!!!! The professional wrote me back almost instantly. Let me explain what happened. I woke up today really upset about reading this last night on 4chan. It bothered me so much that I reached out to a chemist myself but I didn't expect his feedback for a few days as it usually goes that way. No not this time. Here is what he just said to me in the time I started this thread. Full email reply here. He also sent docs but I can't place them here. Anyone interested can receive the forwarded email from me. I have seen and read news reports of this event and consider it to be catastrophic. My sincere apologies if you are directly affected by this tragedy.

The court will not consider me to be an expert on the toxicology of these materials. However, I am trained to design systems and processes to protect workers and community from such materials based on an interpretation of their toxicology.

It is my understanding that the railcars released at least the chemicals of vinyl chloride monomer, benzene, and butyl acrylate.
These were reported by the media, though the media is not particularly reliable.

The State of New Jersey has prepared summaries of hazardous materials, for which I have attached the fact sheets for these three chemicals. Upon review, you will note that the NJ Dept of Health has labeled two of them as carcinogenic and noted that all three “poisonous gases produced in fire.” The primary poisonous gases would be phosgene (a WWI chemical weapon) and hydrogen chloride. I have attached NJDOH fact sheets for these as well.

Based on what I know to this point, I expect the acute impacts will be felt by the community through a wide range of immediate medical crises, including headaches, fatigue, dizziness, weakness, confusion, irregular heartbeat, convulsions, breathing difficulties, burning skin and eyes, irritation of the nose, throat, and lung, as well as nausea and vomiting to name a few. The chronic effects will be experienced across a much wider area for years to come and will involve cancers, liver damage, birth defects, crop damage. Though I don’t know the amount of material released, video and images suggest the amounts are substantial. One NPR report suggested 11 railcars of hazardous material may have derailed, and such railcars typically hold 6,500 to 30,000 gallons (depending on the type of railcar).

The railroad company should have a written plan for how they would respond to such an emergency. The following link is to a 2018 version of Norfolk Southern’s Emergency Response Planning Guide. I would be interested to know how much of this document was actually followed in the immediate aftermath of the incident. I would suggest downloading this large file before it disappears from the internet.
