What Happened To Google Search?

15 years ago, I could find any information on any topic using google. I can't find anything anymore. And it's because google returns results that are not what I asked for.

I aske for, "gypsy caravan" in quotations. Google gives me 7 pages of ads for dodge caravan minivans and on the 6th page it tells me there are no more results to display. That's fucking bullshit. Google ceased to be a search engine 10 years. It's just an ad platform now, sending you ads roughly based on what you asked for.

That's why google doesn't work. It's got nothing to do with anything this guy is talking about.

I just replicated your search using Google Search.

No Dodge Caravan ads. First hit at the top of page was Wikipedia's entry for "Vardo (Romani wagon)", which I've never heard of, but is apparently a Gypsy caravan.

It is much harder to find things on google as the algorithm has been manipulated to give useless hits unless very specific search terms are used.

It helps to use quotes around the search terms.

It is bizarre how we only have three computer operating systems, none of them are what people like or want. We should have a range of choices, as for search engines..it's a joke. Years back there were hundreds of them when the internet was free.

Is it any better on the Dark Net? I really don't know how to navigate that.

Been using Yandex for years,found it be better in most things,not all of course...

But yea google has gone from bad to worse in the last few years...

Bing is total useless...

Too much censorship, political bias and "targeted" search results. Google is not the company it once was.

I use qwant, it's quite good, I find results I never see on Google.

Startpage.com (formerly Ixquix), it is an excellent PRIVATE search page.

And as typical of my GLP browsing experience these last 23yrs (tested and confirmed PRE smartphones), I was just experiencing a moment when using Chrome and just trying to type in the website name at the top, it automatically defaults to a Google search instead of taking me directly to the intended webpage.

What kind of voodoo is this shit now? After being offline most of the day, except to TRY and check a few things that resulted in the above mentioned frustration, I finally pull up GLP to check page 1 and my eyes instantly saw the title and had to chuckle and open it right away.

Lmfao. The most innocuous thought had, on any random topic in existence, it's almost a given that there will be a thread about it here on GLP when you pull up the site. Lol, the only thing I can surmise is, we ARE a Collective, it's known that we all SHARE a macrospace here in 3Dland. Kinda hard to HAVE an original thought, lol!

Oh, and Google sucks.

Yup, I too noticed even during that last few weeks, that google has gone down the drain. I get many times just "no results found".

Duckduckgo works still better and stops google from getting my browsing data, but probably a matter of time until it's also gone.

The early internet was awesome, truly fun and interesting to explore. But the internet and even computers used to be a niche hobby for a small minority, as it got bigger and more people were involved it started to turn to trash. Common to all industries really, they get worse as they upscale and try to appeal to the lowest common denominator.

dogpile is good, it passed my test. My test is to search "flat earth" and if it returns results as if you searched "debunk of flat earth" then it fails the test. All of the main search engines fail the test.

I have come across things that are virtually unsearchable on Google, like if it happens to be too similar to some current movie title, etc. I even tried looking up local weeds, like garden weeds, it assumed that obviously I meant marijuana because surely no one is actually interested in identifying garden weeds. And other things, like a definition of "fascism" or other potentially contentious things, are not even worth trying to look up.

It's been crappy for at least several years now. I remember the old days, I used to be able to find information on even the most obscure topics, it was great.

Yandex is decent for images. Yes, it's a Russian site.

DDG sells your data to google.
I cant be assed finding the link now but its true.
They also promoted censorship re russia and covid.
They are a honeypot.

Honestly it's best to use a variety of search engines and not get stuck on any one, it's better for security and youll get better results too

Just tried qwant and searched for n u d e moms. 0 results.

I worked at a company back in the late 90s and we would pay Google every month to insure that our companies name would come up first in searches for our product. That was the late 90s I cant imagine how bad it is now.
