Knife guys - How the HELL does a Benchmade Bailout Knife cost $270????
rant

So, I was looking through Benchmade's New catalog and looked at the prices. I can't remember paying this much.

Seriously, it's plastic (OK, Fiberglass reinforced nylon, but whatever)It has terrific steel, but there's hardly any of it.

$270

Um no
Three knife companies I can recommend

Esee
Mora
Extrema Ratio

Now THIS is a $300 knife

Well, the price on ALL metal has gone up a ridiculous amount, and shortages of some bar stock have been going on for a while (info from an ex-steel trader I'm related to.)

Still doesn't justify the prices - but then, I've felt that Benchmade has been riding the name for a long time know. Honestly, I'll look at CRKT before Benchmade now - they've come a long way and are managing to keep prices reasonable. If I want to pay Benchmade prices, I'll look for a custom shop instead.

Lol, yep, I have their Crooked River and it's beautiful
and also have a bugout that someone gave me. i replaced the scales because it felt really cheap.

Oh, I love my AFO. That also is worth the price, but compare the AFO to the bailout.

I really like their soldier series where they had the vets design the knives according to what they needed. Great concept.

So why are you saying the bailout is so high? Prices have definitely risen for all knives in the past two years. Hell just 2 years ago bugouts would be around $120-$130. Now they are like $170 I think? They do make a quality hand made USA knives and are one of the few left that don’t do outside production of any model. I have a Spyderco made in Golden Colorado, USA. Earth but as you know spyders models are made all over the world. Benchmade has a real lifetime warranty also. So I don’t think it’s bad for a knife that will out live you?

It’s a good knife but it’s basically like the John Deere thing.
I’ve never understood why people pay considerably more for paint.

Good point, I just think the materials used are not even close to worth what they are asking. I think my 940 would outlive me, but I can't see the bailout doing the same.

Agreed. I have a Carson design M16-14SFG (the Tanto point flipper) and I really like it. Purchased for heavy point use and it's never seen a chip. Also has excellent locking, like my Buck - it's about as close as you can get to fixed blade when open.

Re: Knife guys - How the HELL does a Benchmade Bailout Knife cost $270????
not familar with that, i have one benchmade i got a couple years ago, its nice but was about $140 on sale. mini presido II

it has a 3'in blade, just SV30 steel and nice frame a carbon injected nylon. SV30 has been around a good while and is one of the OG "super steels" hard to sharpen but holds an edge a long time. Of course there are better steels now like SV90, M390, CPM-20CV
and many others.

benchmade is alright, but prefer spyderco (the japanese blades are their best) and USA made spyders or Hogue knives
Kershaw is good if you get the ones actually made in the USA, but gotta pay a price

benchmades are all made in USA, hence higher price tag
