Also, it depends on the level of classification. If it’s confidential it’s not that big of a deal, it’s still a crime. If Pence has an NSA approved safe it’s not a crime. Same for secret. If it’s TS it’s usually in a SCIF in a safe in the SCIF. With alarms and cameras like Trump has.

As the VP he probably had a SCIF in his house. That should have gone away and those documents destroyed or moved to another SCIF.


I wish the press would stop saying “classified” markings. They mean classification markings. Code words and programs have classified markings, but SECRET is a classification level.

Sharing of Classified Information With Other Countries:

In cases where the United States wishes to share classified information bilaterally (or multilaterally) with a country that has a sharing agreement, the information is marked with "REL TO USA", (release) and the three-letter country code.

For example, if the U.S. wanted to release classified information to the government of Canada, it would mark the document "REL TO USA, CAN". There are also group releases, such as NATO, FVEY or UKUSA. Those countries would have to maintain the classification of the document at the level originally classified (Top Secret, Secret, etc.)
