Calling All Mechanics on GLP......I need some gawt-dayum guidance | |
BRIEF
User ID: 79662918 United States 01/15/2023 10:16 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Ok, I'll lay out the facts Quoting: Just Passing Through..... 97 Tahoe 2 door Z71 Sport with all the off-road goodies offered by GM Now, the rear-end/differential is making a whine/hum that starts around 20-25mph and is constant all the way up to 70-75mph. If I let off the gas it disappears. The rear end is a 10-bolt 8.6" gear. It has 30 spline axles, it has the factory G80 locker and 3.42 gear ratio. I replaced the axle bearings/seals and changed out the differential oil and added some reaally good friction modifier for the locker. So, this is my question. Is this pinion bearings, carrier bearings? Is this the backlash on my gesr and pinion becoming too sloppy? If that's the case that means my gears are fucked, yes? Anyone can share their .02 cents as long as it's constructive and on topic. I have Chevy's, Ford's, Dodge's, and Toyota's in my driveway so nobody needs to say I need to get rid of my Chevy. All brands have their pluses and minues. So no shit talking about what brand is best. I have all the brands worth owning and they all have issues....even my 97 'Yota FJ80. I just want to know how fucked I am with my rear differential. I've never rebuilt a rear differential before so diagnosing this whine/hum has been hard. You need to raise the vehicle off the ground, with the wheels hanging and in neutral...Parking brake off, and check it manually. If the noise is inside the differential, then remove the inspection plate. Rotate the wheels to determine if the spider gears are worn...If so, get a Jasper rebuilt for probably $1500-2000 I'd guess. Don't rebuild it yourself unless you're a machinist and know what you're doing...A rebuilt is the way to go. I'm pretty competent with this stuff. I have all the goodies too in my garage. However....... Time is a very important thing for me so it may just be easier like you said and just buy a rebuilt rear end and just swap it out. In fact, I think I'll do that now. You like Jasper? I was on Rigid Axle and they have A1 Cardone. I guess I'll compare what internals are in each and go from there. Thank you Jasper is who I have always used...They can even custom build the ratio you need, if you tell them what engine, the HP and type of transmission, for the perfect power ratio you want. I never forgive and I never forget I am a licensed firearm holder. I will, under protection of law, use lethal force if attacked. |

This is the 8.6" 30 spline with the G80 locker. A little beefier than the normal 10 bolt. The normal Tahoe axle with 3.08 ratio, open diff and 8.5" ring is around 300-450 around here. I still have to pull it and there is no promise that that rear end wasn't abused or poorly maintained. Anonymous Coward User ID: 78542367 United States 01/15/2023 10:43 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Rebuilt a 1 ton rear axle and had someone helping me. Took great time and care setting everything up properly and it all made it 2k miles or more and noticed same grinding noise as before. Fellow helping me, had attached the driveline to axle and come to find out the u joint was bound Stuck! Not until I took it apart myself the second time did I notice This! It destroyed the pinion bearing aging in short order This time I found a complete axle for $200 and replaced easily and quickly have 20k trouble free miles on it after replacing U JOINTS this time! 402k miles on truck now |

A buddy just had his z71 g80 with 3.42 making noise, that axle ratio was a little harder to find but did find a few for $300 in East TX area ended up getting a whole truck for $1000 with locked up engine. Got the rear out of it and parted rest of truck out for $1500 pretty quickly selling the parts relatively cheap. A little more work and time but made a little $ while fixing the problem and he even got a bunch of other usable parts in the process! |

If there is a whine it is time to do all bearings and races..ALL. input, pinion, carrier, axle shaft. Your gears may be just fine and most likely are as long as they are not chowdered and missing teeth and chips. Just shim correctly on re-assembly for proper clearance and contact. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 70835953 United States 01/15/2023 11:28 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I see so many of these trucks that are wrecked or have rusted broken frames, the axles are everywhere. The crush sleeve sets the pinion gear depth, if you didn't do it correctly, that's the problem. |
