When I was in the service 81-84 we were concerned with the Soviets and the threat seemed real. But maybe that was a bunch of BS too. It's very frustrating to see that young people of any nationality are dying when diplomacy can resolves these things.

Thousands of Ukrainian servicemen found themselves in an operational encirclement in Soledar.

The night before, it became known that the Ukrainian units located on the territory of Soledar received an order to begin immediate withdrawal of their forces from this city. Ukrainian troops have only 24 hours to implement the withdrawal - during which time increased strikes are expected to be carried out by Ukrainian troops in Soledar to cover the retreat of key forces.

Such information does not officially appear, but according to Ukrainian news resources, starting around midnight, Ukrainian troops did begin to retreat from the city, withdrawing military equipment and their units. The reason for the retreat was that the Russian military cut a key road to the city, due to which further defense in Soledar would not seem expedient.

About 100 Ukrainian servicemen have been taken from Donbass to medical facilities with frostbite in the past few days. An officer from the Luhansk People's Republic, Andriy Marochko, told TASS on Tuesday.
"In recent days, about 100 servicemen with various degrees of frostbite have been admitted to Ukrainian medical institutions from the EWS zone. Most of the patients were admitted in a state of strong alcoholic intoxication," he said.

According to Marochko, about 40% of hospitalized Ukrainian servicemen were diagnosed with severe frostbite, which resulted in amputation of limbs. [link to tass.ru (secure)]

The Investigative Committee is investigating the actions of a Latvian mercenary who committed crimes against Russian servicemen. This was reported to journalists on Monday in the press service of the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation.

"Investigators of the Investigative Committee of Russia will investigate the next facts of crimes committed by mercenaries of foreign states against Russian servicemen. Thus, a criminal legal assessment will be given to the statements and actions of Latvian mercenary Kriste Ankas," the report said.

I was wondering why Russia waits a week or so between launching the missile attacks on infrastructure.

I think the delay is so they can manufacture enough new missiles. Just firing a few missiles might not get through.
I think they only launch in large numbers to overwhelm whatever defenses Ukraine has.
