The great Russian writer Fyodor Mikhailovich Dostoevsky foresaw this day 100+ years ago.
Look at what he wrote in 1877, when Russia was at war with the Ottoman Empire, liberating the Balkans:

...To my inner conviction, the most complete and irresistible, Russia will not have, and has never had, such haters, envious people, slanderers and even open enemies, as all these Slavic tribes, as soon as Russia will free them, and Europe will agree to recognize them liberated! And let them not contradict me, or challenge me, or shout at me that I exaggerate and that I am a hater of the Slavs! Long, oh, for a long time they would not be able to recognize the unselfishness of Russia and the great, holy, unheard of in the world raising the banner of the greatest idea, of those ideas with which man lives and without which humanity, if these ideas stop living in him - stiffens, maims and dies in sores and powerlessness (...).
Perhaps for a whole century, or more, they will ceaselessly tremble for their freedom and fear the power of Russia; they will ingratiate themselves to the European states, will slander Russia, gossip about her and intrigue against her.
Oh, I do not speak of individuals: there will be those who will understand what Russia has meant, means and will always mean to them. They will understand all the greatness and all the sanctity of the cause of Russia and the great idea, the banner of which it will set in mankind. But these people, especially in the beginning, will appear in such a miserable minority that they will be subject to ridicule, hatred, and even political persecution.
It will be especially gratifying for the freed Slavs to express and trumpet to the whole world that they are educated tribes, capable of the highest European culture, whereas Russia is a barbarous country, a grim northern colossus, not even of pure Slavic blood, a persecutor and hater of European civilization.
They will, of course, have, from the beginning, constitutional government, parliaments, responsible ministers, orators, speeches. They will be enormously comforted and delighted by this. (...)
Russia should be seriously prepared that all these liberated Slavs will rush towards Europe with zeal, until they lose their personality, contaminated by European forms, political and social, and thus will have to live through a whole and long period of Europeanism, before they can comprehend anything of their Slavic significance and their particular Slavic vocation in the milieu of humanity. Between themselves, these lands will forever quarrel, forever envy each other and intrigue against each other.
Of course, in a moment of any serious trouble, they will all certainly turn to Russia for help. No matter how much they will hate, gossip and slander us to Europe, flirting with it and assuring it of love, they will always instinctively feel (of course, in the moment of trouble and not before) that Europe is the natural enemy of their unity, was and always will be, and that if they exist in the world, then certainly because there is a huge magnet - Russia, which, irresistibly attracting them all to itself, thus restrains their integrity and unity. There will even be times when they will be able to almost consciously agree that without Russia, the great eastern center and the great attractive force, their unity would instantly break up, scatter to pieces, and even to the point that their very nationality would disappear into the European ocean, as several individual drops of water in the sea disappear.

Russia for a long time will have the task of reconciling them, making sense to them, and perhaps even drawing her sword for them on occasion. Of course, now there is a question: What is the benefit for Russia here, because of what Russia fought for them for a hundred years, sacrificed her blood, strength, money? Is it because of reaping only a little ridiculous hatred and ingratitude?
Oh, of course, Russia will always be aware that she is the center of Slavic unity, that if the Slavs live a free national life, it is because she wanted and wishes to do so, because she made and created everything. But what benefit will this consciousness bring to Russia, except labors, troubles and eternal worries?
