Re: The NEW PRACTICAL PREPPING IF POOR - protocols for penny pinching tightwad who want to be prepared
When I was really poor my first prep was a 12 gauge pump and a box of buckshot. Then, bags of beans and rice from the restaurant supply store. Tell them you are stocking for a large church camp out.

Mormons, I.e., Rainy Day Foods, was next when I had enough to buy a pallet of storage food. That was in 2009 and we are slowly eating it so we can rotate our stock.

Bulk Foods is good online for spices, nuts, dried fruit.

Began buying livestock such as cows, goats, and sheep to slaughter and process myself.

Deep freezers are full!

Building a physical library on the cheap means looking for used books and being open to what you find. The single best place to look is library sales but yard and rummage sales can surprise you.

When I started building my library it was clearly with a goal of being a complete resource in a grid down situation. With that in mind I included books that would be useful beyond the near term. This means that while I was looking for texts on survival I was also picking up stuff like the Foxfire books, old technology like steam engines, weaving and spinning, woodworking, blacksmithing, etc.

At the same time I was looking for references and textbooks like mathematical tables, engineering manuals, strength of materials, chemistry, electronics, microbiology, computer programming, dictionaries, history and a host of other topics.

And then there's literature. One thing that I've been concerned about is the attack on the classics that formed the thinking of our culture so I've been picking up old books that haven't been abridged or 'modernized'. And these are the cheapest of them all because no one else seems to want them.

I used to live just down the street from a local library and never even got a library card for them because my collection was far superior to their glorified collection of romance novels. Public libraries, in their zeal to cater to the woke culture, have become less and less relevant to practical knowledge. So if you can spare the room, please consider forming a library of your own. Even a 3 shelf bookcase can house an enormous amount of information that can provide you and those around you with the ability to not only survive but even thrive in a SHTF environment.

Thank you for adding that info.
I had totally forgot about Craigslist.

I did some research on credit unions today and this is what I found. Credit unions are not insured by the F.I.C.A. they are insured by the National Credit Union Administration (NCUA) for the same amount as savings banks, that is $250,000. This information is available online . There is an Electronic Share Insurance Calculator to figure out how much you can get on all your accounts (called Shares) should the credit union fail. This is all I have found out so far an d I am going to do more research. I thought this was good to know.

Here is my list in no particular order or price range.

Things I think I would want on hand rather than wish I had them and can't get them.

Numerous steel heavy duty spring carabiner clips of various sizes.

Several thousand yards of type III 550 7 strand paracord and type IV 750 11 strand. Rope of all types. Wire of all type. Thread of all type. Sail maker needles, washers, leather scrap and eye screws. Tape measures.

Hand tools, never go out of style as long as they are quality steel. Work gloves and wool socks go well with these to help prevent blisters or susceptibility to cold.

For tools, think about getting, Full tang steel hatchet, machete, split maul, axe, chisels, various pruning saw, cross cut saws, shovels, rakes, and wheelbarrows. 2 each.

Hammer and nails of various size and type. Knives.....lots and lots of knives!

Multiple and various steel bowls, basins, tubs and buckets. Plastic bags, buckets, tarps and tubs. Canvas tarp. old tire tubes. Duct tape, electrical tape and adhesives. Flat, solid cotton sheets and blankets. Plastic Polly pipe. Scissors and sheers, more knives!

A wood burning stove with a flat top. Cast iron cookware. A dinner call/alarm iron triangle. Some dice, some playing cards. Sheets of unlined paper, number two pencils in quantity, a guitar and a harmonica.

Kerosene lamps and lamp oil and wicks. A couple of heavy duty mountain bikes. A transportable portage-able boat. Fishing equipment. Guns and ammo of various type. Sling shots, blow dart guns and darts, bows, arrows and accessories.

Learn to make your own cheese and butter.

Butter is a good project for small kids 6 and up.

We had fun the other day with the grandkids making butter.
Pour some cream in a jar with a marble and let the kids shake
it till their arms are falling off.
I played KC and The Sunshine Band Shake Shake Shake.
They liked the song so much the 6 yo. probably played it 50 times. (I had to finish the project with a mixer and strain the buttermilk off.)

MAKE A LIST!

Make a list of things to do the moment TSHTF.

Everybody (including me) will be in a shock and daze when that SHTF moment occurs...make a list and follow it...don't think...just follow your list.

Things like
- Chain the fence gate closed.
- Fill EVERYTHING with water.
- Load all weapons.
- Etc...
- Etc...

We aren't cut out to be socialists. We are the people who couldn't be constrained by Europe. We are the malcontents, idealists, speculators, dreamers, inventors, debtors and criminals who would not be chained. We don't play well with others, we are brash, outlandish and cunning. let us do what we do best; let us be Americans.

While you still can, hit all the yard sales and library sales for books. They are actively changing books right now to fit their agenda, including the bible, from what I've heard. Make sure you get hard copies of everything you need, from gardening books, cook books, animal care, health care, etc. This way you have it on paper in case the lights go out.

A lot of people don't want those books and just toss em out, so always keep an eye open for them.

Many may not seem applicable, but once you read, then perhaps reread them, you will view the world of design differently. As my mentor said 'you put on Permaculture goggles'...
Let their designs become hardened, so that whatever they have conspired shall return upon their own heads.
For they have devised a plan, but it was not for them.
They prepared themselves maliciously, but they were found to be impotent.

Aquire and learn to use paper maps. Get the ones covering your region and the route to your bug out location if you have one.

Get out there with the maps and familiarise yourself with their use and the lay of the land.

Make notes about routes, places to camp, sources of water and anything you think may be useful if the s does make contact with the f.

Make it fun! Get fit!

If you're thinking about getting chickens, look into quail first. They are easy to care for and you can raise them indoors or on your balcony. High quality meat and eggs and both are regarded as luxury items by restaurants, a potential source of income..

If you have space, get a couple tons of building sand, couple tons of gravel. As well as being useful for building projects, you can fill sandbags for flood protection, or ballistic protection if needed.

We also have several pallets of concrete blocks always on hand. Quick and easy way of constructing raised beds, and they are removable as well.

If you haven't got a driveway alarm, why not?? They are cheap and easy to install and will give you early warning of visitors, welcome or otherwise.
