User ID: 81540243 United States 12/03/2022 02:42 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Kept thinking about my .454 Casull revolver and thinking "shoot shoot shoot!". Do never go into bear country carrying just a $10 squirt can. Really stupid. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 73929620 I agree about the $10 squirt can but the macho 44 mag or 454 Casull is just too much. Why not a .460 S&W? With those big hand cannons you can’t get off a follow-up shot, unless you practice a lot, so you are reduced to one well placed shot at a charging bear. Also, the 357 or 10 mm have much better penetration to get through the nose and rip the brian apart. Don’t aim above the eyes or you will totally miss his brian. Bear brians are low in their heads behind their noses. If you have a 454 and shoot high chances are the bear is now 10-15 feet closer, pissed off, scared, and angry, your second shot will likely go higher and to the right. You become bear chow with a big gun. You can’t kill a charging bear quickly with a shot to the body, it’s got to be a shot to the CNS. There is a long history of people taking bears with 22 caliber rifles. An Alaskan kid killed a bear with bird shot straight through the schnozz. A well placed shot to the brian pan will do the job better than a great big hole in the bears back or chest. Remember those old 45 Colts were black powder and had a lot less energy than even a modern .38 and those guys killed bears with them. I cary a .357, I recommend a 10mm if you want an auto. My friend carries a shotgun. A 45/70 carbine would be good too. Whatever you are comfortable with. Smoke me a kipper, I’ll be back for breakfast. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 80307103 Back around 2005 I was in Yellowstone talking to a ranger that told me about a couple that got eaten by a grizzly. Apparently the idiot shot the grizzly with a .32 auto! When the ranger came upon the grizzly he had a 30 06 lever action with him, and a .44 magnum handgun. He emptied the 6 rounds of 30 06 into the grizzly, and then switched to his .44 magnum, all the time thinking he would save the last .44 mag bullet for himself. He lucked out and the grizzly dropped before he ran out of .44 mags. When they cut the grizzly open they found the remains of the couple the grizzly had eaten. They also found tiny .32 auto bullets lodged in it's outer fat. Back in the 1980s when I was a forester one of my friends won a contract up in Alaska, and he tried to get me to work the contract with him. He said I would have to buy a .44 magnum because of the grizzlies. I told him, "No thank you." What .22 Rifle did Bella Twin use to Kill a World Record Grizzly in 1953? “One of the largest grizzlies I have ever heard of was killed by an Indian woman with one shot from an old single-shot .22 Stevens rifle.” [link to www.ammoland.com (secure)] I think I would rather go with an AR-15 chambered in .450 Bushmaster, with several 30 round magazines. As much as I love my Volquartsen .22 with 25 round magazines, I would never use it against a bear. Agree, a .22 is a 5% shot at best...upper face/head shot. Go with a .40 caliber or higher and empty your clip center mass.. No, no, no! Shoot him in the head. The guy with the .32 auto probably emptied it in the bears chest and shoulders. If he had remained clam and shot the bear through the snoot he might be alive. Caliber size is no replacement for a well placed shot. Bella’s shot was behind the bears left ear straight into the brian. She done good. Also, if all you have is a .22 you’d better use it and make your shot count! Quoting: Skanner The problem with the spray is they have to get get too close to you before you can spray them. This guy was comfortable in his situation. Had it been a larger or more aggressive bear he would have used his handgun. Unless you are experienced shooter good luck hitting bear lethally with your gun, when your hands are shaking. There are plenty of stories how hunters have wounded bear with several shots and bear still attacked them. Maze is good, because you just need to blast it onto bears general direction and hope wind doesn't play tricks on you. |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 83822354 I'm only guessing, he may have looked playful, but when I saw it I thought running up those trees was not only to get a better look but to also exercise up his claws for a potential attack. |

I think it's actually trying to play with him. Not that it means it any safer, I just don't think a bear that small is going to be interested in attacking an adult human. Source: me, in the bush confronted bear black bears MANY times. Much much bigger than this. We don't consider black bears to be a threat to humans here. |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 81922289 If you're in brown bear country, a minimum of 44 mag is smart. It was a juvenile black bear that looked to be playful. This is a brown/grizzly bear. BIG difference here. Notice the lever action rifle is laying on the log to the lower right. Must be viewed on YouTube for some reason. [link to www.youtube.com (secure)] |
