Quoting: allentownchemtard wow use your brains. he could have been saying "woaaa squirrel, woaaaa wolf, woaaa dodo bird", and bear would have reacted the same. you YELL and act threatening to scare it off. its all about tone and he was too calm about it. oh well, spray works and hes alive and the bear is alive, I tell you he was selling bear spray. No one in his right mind would be walking backwards holding a cam if this was 'real' danger. . Yeah, seems like he took too many chances just to promote bear spray. What if he tripped and fell while in reverse mode? Not very smart, imo. The truth is easy to remember. |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 83156220 Canada 12/03/2022 12:04 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Bear spray is amazing.. against humans. I mean better than a gun, shuts them down immediately. Against a bear? Ironically not so much. Quoting: Shaun Kaven The last time I was in Montana, I was told a story by a local near Whitefish. An experienced guide was out in the woods, never came back. They found him half eaten (the bear buried the other half, presumably to come back and eat it later). Next to his body was a spent container of bear spray. I always presumed that he missed - it’s not easy to take the safety off and fire that thing accurately when a grizzly is hurtling toward you. But now I’m not so sure… Wow, that’s so sad! :( I took the safety off of mine to test it after I bought it. The spray is on the outside of my backpack with ziplock bag over it with a loose elastic around the bag. I’m really mindful of bears here because there’s lots of them, except when I have my camera, I can’t find them when I have that ready lol. [imgur] [link to imgur.com (secure)] |

User ID: 80785597 United States 12/03/2022 12:23 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Spending 17 years on rivers in Alaska, I researched/learned as much about bears as possible. It was time well spent, as I have had many sightings (with some encounters very close). Quoting: Georgia_dawg There are some very good and accurate comments here, as well as some steeped in ignorance of bears and their behavior. -As some posters have said; this is a cinnamon phase juvenile black bear. In addition to the physical characteristics that give it away, its tree climbing proclivity is a feature of black bears. Browns/grizzlies don't climb them, with the exception of cubs who may do so to escape danger. It is also why black bears do it, i.e. to escape the danger of a larger brown/grizzly bear. -This bear kept climbing up trees like it was scared of him and wanted to have its escape route already planned. -He was saying, "hey bear" to let the bear know he was there. This is good practice, especially in thick bush and not sure of what is around as to not startle any unknown bears in the vicinity. The #1 reason to get attacked is by startling a bruin. But this bear was already aware of him. So by him saying it (especially in a calming tone) was useless. Furthermore, it may have been counterproductive since this bear may have been conditioned by stupid humans to not be afraid of them. Or even worse, some stupid humans could have conditioned it with food. Either way, it knew he was there and was curious of him, not startled or aggressive. And he maybe kept luring it along with his soothing voice. If he would have shut up and kept backing away, it may have stayed in one of the trees until he cleared the area. I wonder if some posters are correct and he sells bear spray. If so, he may have known where a humanized juvenile bear is located to make his video showing the effectiveness of the spray. If so, he's an ass. Thank you. I don't know much about them. I know to keep my distance from them should I encounter them. I ride alot in the Piedmont National Forest and have never seen one. My friend has pointed out scratches?? on trees that he said were bear scratches. I don't know. We make a lot of noise usually to scare away the wildlife as we ride. Like I said before I don't want to tangle with one. |

User ID: 72515418 United States 12/03/2022 12:28 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Bear spray is not as strong as regular human pepper spray/ mace. It has a stronger spray so that you can get the bear before it gets in paws reach but the actual active ingredient is weaker because bears have a much greater reaction to the active ingredient What? Huh? Are we just making stuff up now? Bear spray is two orders of magnitude stronger than regular mace. Look it up. And anyone who has been even remotely near it when it has been discharged knows this. I’m talking about the absolute worst pain of your life and it last 24 hours. Self defense pepper spray is much much more potent and encapacitating to a recipient. Bear pepper spray is formulated to be just enough irritant to be unpleasant to the bear, in order to cause it to want to run away, and is NOT to the strength level that it irritates the bear, for it to become angered and then to go into an attack response. |
