There’s grizzly bears where I am now and I’m on the trails often here, so seeing this was helpful! I carry bear spray always. Quoting: -Kate- 5* get bear bangers and not the kind that shoot Thanks, never heard of them before and looked them up! the main thing is not the kind that shoot because they make one big bang when leaving the pen and another 30 feet or so away if that second bang goes off on the other side of the bear it can make it do a 180 and come back to you i have used/played with both kinds and have had to use them against a grizzly once |

It may work most of the time...if it doesn't work that time then playful bear will become agressive bear. It's like being in a threatening situation with a human. You pull your gun out and you might scare your attacker away...but then again you might be killed in the process. |

User ID: 72543399 United States 12/03/2022 11:37 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Bear spray is amazing.. against humans. I mean better than a gun, shuts them down immediately. Against a bear? Ironically not so much. The last time I was in Montana, I was told a story by a local near Whitefish. An experienced guide was out in the woods, never came back. They found him half eaten (the bear buried the other half, presumably to come back and eat it later). Next to his body was a spent container of bear spray. I always presumed that he missed - it’s not easy to take the safety off and fire that thing accurately when a grizzly is hurtling toward you. But now I’m not so sure… Last Edited by Shaun Kaven on 12/03/2022 11:38 AM Like I told my ex-wife, I said: honey, I never drive faster than I can see. Besides that, it’s all in the reflexes… |

User ID: 84588684 United States 12/03/2022 11:38 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Bear spray is not as strong as regular human pepper spray/ mace. It has a stronger spray so that you can get the bear before it gets in paws reach but the actual active ingredient is weaker because bears have a much greater reaction to the active ingredient WRONG have you ever sprayed bear spray People also ask Is bear spray stronger than pepper spray? Standard pepper sprays have around 1 million SHUs, while bear sprays pack 3 million SHUs, Read this " Although similar to pepper spray, bear spray is known to have a much lower concentration of oleoresin capsicum. Capsicum can be thought of as the “heat” when it comes to peppers." You might see people carrying bear spray instead of self defense pepper spray because in some places pepper spray is illegal whereas bear spray is not. It’ll remember the foul smell of Bear spray next time it sees a person. But for an inexperienced hiker who thinks the Bear wants to play a game and didn’t bother to even bring Bear spray, this could have gone bad quickly. If you don’t believe in owning firearms, you deserve whatever happens to you out in the woods. Not all Black Bears will run away or investigate. Some won’t even bluff charge. The occasional Bear will just charge from what you may think is a safe distance and they will close that gap in seconds, so you will either shoot or become a chew toy. It’s not common but I’ve seen it a couple of times in my lifetime. User ID: 84056322 United States 12/03/2022 11:58 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Spending 17 years on rivers in Alaska, I researched/learned as much about bears as possible. It was time well spent, as I have had many sightings (with some encounters very close). There are some very good and accurate comments here, as well as some steeped in ignorance of bears and their behavior. -As some posters have said; this is a cinnamon phase juvenile black bear. In addition to the physical characteristics that give it away, its tree climbing proclivity is a feature of black bears. Browns/grizzlies don't climb them, with the exception of cubs who may do so to escape danger. It is also why black bears do it, i.e. to escape the danger of a larger brown/grizzly bear. -This bear kept climbing up trees like it was scared of him and wanted to have its escape route already planned. -He was saying, "hey bear" to let the bear know he was there. This is good practice, especially in thick bush and not sure of what is around as to not startle any unknown bears in the vicinity. The #1 reason to get attacked is by startling a bruin. But this bear was already aware of him. So by him saying it (especially in a calming tone) was useless. Furthermore, it may have been counterproductive since this bear may have been conditioned by stupid humans to not be afraid of them. Or even worse, some stupid humans could have conditioned it with food. Either way, it knew he was there and was curious of him, not startled or aggressive. And he maybe kept luring it along with his soothing voice. If he would have shut up and kept backing away, it may have stayed in one of the trees until he cleared the area. I wonder if some posters are correct and he sells bear spray. If so, he may have known where a humanized juvenile bear is located to make his video showing the effectiveness of the spray. If so, he's an ass. Last Edited by Georgia_dawg on 12/03/2022 12:02 PM |

I said it would have been justifiable to kill that bear. The person filming handled it as well as he could have without killing it. Fair disclosure...I would have killed it when it made the final charge. My point is that this wasn't a bear spray commercial, ffs. |
