Under District Attorney Krasner, murders and violence occur in every part of the city at every hour of the day. Shootings on public transportation, in populated neighborhoods with families and children, near schools and in the center city business district have now become frequent and routine. Open air drug markets have become ubiquitous. He has decriminalized prostitution effectively destroying programs designed to rescue women from addiction and human trafficking. Krasner, who was overwhelmingly reelected by Philadelphia voters last year, is not accused of breaking the law. Instead, Republicans argued that he should be removed from office for various reasons, including his failure to prosecute some minor crimes and his bail request policies, his staff oversight and reports that his office didn't adequately notify crime victims about certain matters. They also alleged that Krasner obstructed the House's investigation of his office. State Rep. Martina White, R-Philadelphia, a prime sponsor of the impeachment resolution and a political ally of the city police union that has clashed with Krasner, said: "This man has denied that there is even a crisis of crime happening on our streets." On November 14, 2022, the Philadelphia Inquirer pointed to a report by The Trace that indicates there were no carjackings at Philadelphia gas stations “between 2018 and 2020.” So the surge in carjackings has been part and parcel of the overall increase in gun violence witnessed under Mayor Jim Kenney (D). |
