For the "Potassium Iodide" pill, you must follow the rules on when to take them, and for how long. They are not designed for long term protection, such as a meltdown at a nuclear power plant, that may be chugging out radiation for weeks, months, or years. They are more designed for if a nuclear bomb goes off fairly close to you where the nuclear fallout will blow onto your area, then drift away. The pills are too toxic to take longer than recommended. Also, they only provide some protection against "Thyroid Cancer", by flushing radioactive iodine out of the thyroid gland. That is probably the most common form of cancer after a nuclear exposure, but there are many others, such as strontium causing bone cancers, etc. And if you get too large of a dose of radiation, nothing will help you, your internal organs will start to "melt", and you will bleed out of every orifice in your body, then you will die.
