Help needed. Europe-able ideas to keep warm?
Dear GLPers,

"with tears streaming down my face" ...

Let me say it bluntly:
I am fxxxxxg afraid of what the future will have in store for us.
I am all sarcasm atm, because I just can't anymore, I am running out on ideas, because the most simple solution is not available for me.

Especially with winter approaching fast over here.
It's been raining and cold for some weeks now, and my house is already cold and damp, mold might be just a few weeks away.
No gas no electricity is what awaits us, and I won't bother if it's only me.

But right now i am thinking I'd prefer a nuke on our head a trillion times over seeing my child freeze to death.

I am prepared as good as I can otherwise, lived through many potential dooms over the decades on here, but I didn't have the means to get a wood stove yet.
I can't afford one, and the cheap ones went out of stock long ago.

And as some in other threads suggested buildyourown, yeah well, that's not a thing over here, not allowed and not a thing I could physically do.

I have wool blankets, I have a small camping stove, I have some of those emergency blankets and a tent.

Food and all that no problem, but cooking/warm water once the gas cans are empty?

If anyone has a really good, cheap and Europe-available idea, please share.

I read the "15 ways to keep house warm thread" but without a wood stove I guess I'm a future popsicle.

thank you.

Edit: enjoy your last weekend in the new normalcy. The bad times of today might be the good all days we think about in the future.

My tomato plants are still outside, I planted extra sturdy wild tomatoes. Last year I was able to pick ripe tasty marbles till mid November. Might bring them in this weekend.

Don't worry about it.

Seriously. Don't worry about it. It won't be Europe that gets fucked over. It'll be the US. We'll end up supplying all the fuel that Europe needs this winter, at the expense of US consumers.

A wood stove or rocket stove is THE absolute bare minimum.

You should absolutely focus on getting one somehow or build it cheaply out of cinder blocks.

It is the most efficient and cheapest to run.

Fact.

Way down south
Take me to your daddy's farm
Let me hear your balalaikas ringing out
Come and keep your comrade warm

Step 1 12v heated blanket

Step 2 portable solar charger

Step 3 12v car battery with power inverter

You can stay warm long at night and even put a panel in the window while the battery is charging you will be warm.

This is not a way to heat a whole house just for survival purposes.

Get a pellet stove if you can. Ever since we got ours, we have not needed to use our oil furnace. And that’s with a 120 year old 2500 sq ft house in the northern Midwest.

1. Build an igloo. I heard the get very hot inside.
2. Buy a wind proof tent or sew one your self.
3. Get wind blocking material cover the windows like curtains.
4. Buy silicone or tape and seal house properly.
5. Create a small underground fire pit outside near your home or backyard.
6. Get a tent and use it inside.
7. Buy extra blankets and double cover.
8. By firestarting kits

Relax OP your not alone and you have been reading to much news..

You are not alone, there are 80 million in Germany and thats just there, most of them are lower to middle class and will not be able to pay that to heat their homes either..

If shit goes to far south they will revolt on the streets and the goverment will probably collapse. The germans have revolted against much less dire situations and it seems that at least in the last few weeks many of them are waking up and protesting to turn the Nordstream back on...
I know not possible now, but atleast they have the right idea..

Anyways Alot of chaos should go down before you would watch any of your loved ones freezing to death...

Anyway I think if they have got you so afraid then they have won, its fear that is really the weapon here.

I know you mean good. But the ones suggesting I should buy a pellet stove or car batteries and solar panels, I don't have the money for it.
It's that simple.
I tried to sell stuff, get extra by housekeeping jobs.
All used for sudden car repair and a hospital stay of the kid (treatment is free by insurance, but not staying with your child).

Igloo ..lol. I'd love to, kid probably, too, but our winters don't have enough snow over here. And in the meantime....?

So why do we have our own homeland security military ready stating Oct 1st then? And the new corona regulations? (officially military is there to help with noncompliance and catastrophes...)

Re: Help needed. Europe-able ideas to keep warm?
I lived in the country side of Spain off grid
We had to truck in our own water and had a generator
Even with a fire place it was a cold winter with 18 ft high ceilings....
So I feel for you and your children, and I am so sorry you face such horrible things....
I grew up in Germany and learned many things from my oma about living through cold German winters after WW11

Here are some suggestions:
Never take showers at night
Always in the morning
Use oil on your skin after the shower

Never leave your house with damp hair

If mornings are cold have your clothes out on the bed and change clothes in bed then get out

For heat:
If you have a gas oven or electric heat it up turn it on set a little fan to blow the air 10 minutes should take the cold edge off

Go to a dollar store or Aldis or similar
Buy tea candles NOT made in China
Buy some clay flower pots
Light the candles and place the flower pot over
Now you have a heat source for about 4 hours it’s very efficient heat!
You tube it
The are a few people who will show you how or what I mean
I am telling you first hand it is very good heat source even if you live in an apt
And inexpensive as you can buy 100 tea candles for less then 20 euros
They burn for about 4 hours
And you can set them up in every room as long as you are careful....
Just make sure the base is fireproof

heat your bed and your children’s with a water bottle
Before bed time....

if you get fevers
Wrap your calves with damp cold towels...it will bring a fever down fast

For the mold go buy baking soda
Sprinkle it where it’s damp and getting moldy
Let it sit and then vacuum or sweep it up

Go to the hard ware store and buy window cling to seal and cover your windows for the winter stop the cold air coming in again makes a huge difference
So does making a door stop and putting it at the base of your outside door
Good and easy craft project you can make with an old sweatshirt and some rice
You can also make easily those rice pillows that you can microwave
Or buy one they are for muscle aches they stay warm for a LONG TIME

Body heat escapes through the head so wear a hat

get a Dog to snuggle with and keep you and your family safe :)

God Speed keep the faith and stay strong

Re: Help needed. Europe-able ideas to keep warm?
I put up temporary plastic sheet partitions that make a very big difference in containing heat.
Pick a place that can be enclosed with two new "walls".
Get framing lumber, 2 " x 2 " (sorry, don't know out w metric) in lengths that will serve as top and bottom plates.
Get similar dimension studs, cut to fit tightly between top and bottom plate.
Cut a little bit long so the tension jams the plates, and you won't have to nail, although it can't hurt to do so. Keep 2 studs separated approx .75 of one meter, for your doorway.
Get plastic sheeting, and attach to the frame to create a four walled room.
I use a stapler. Duct tape helps also.
The smaller this cube is, the easier to heat.
Buy a drywall zipper. Peel the back off, and stick it to the middle of the doorway, starting at the bottom.
Unzip it, and slice the plastic.
Now you have a door.
The neater and thorough you make it, the easier to contain heat.
I've been surprised to learn that just being in a contained cubicle like this, your own body will raise the temperature.
Get a couple GFs in there, and you won't have to run a stove. An electric hot plate might be enough.
The lumber can be 2x2, but can be 2x4, 2x6; thats not critical.
If you use propane etc. You have to ventilate. I have tried using a big buddy propane heater in a small area. Its dangerous.

Re: Help needed. Europe-able ideas to keep warm?
More tips:
Get a butane bottle and single burner stove
Forget the camping stove if you can afford it it’s better or even a butane oven stove
You can find them second hand....

I don’t know if Germany is like Spain but butane bottles the big ones were everywhere and they were less then 20 euros....
That bottle can last 2 to 3 months cooking 3 meals a day,

You can make candles out of orange and lemon peel shells
They burn a good 6 hours

Drink hot tea and honey everyday

Thank you for your suggestions, some of them I have not thought about.

Sleeping bags I do have, and my cat will happily cuddle with us.

Separating a room with plastiksheeting and a drywall door is a good idea!

Butane bottles,hm.only butan i have is thise really small ones for the campingstove. It's propane over here what you buy for gas bbq grill, heating and stuff and they sold out before summer started! We have a hard time finding an empty one to get it refilled, and prices are double anyways.

Rope,matches and a pitchfork - check!
but I won't walk 500miles to Berlin :)

Ever heard of the phrase and band name, 3 Dog Night? It comes from Medieval Europe, when poor people could not afford heat, a critical mass of three dogs kept a person warm at night. I'd recommend larger breeds with long fur, like shepherds, mastiffs. Just be prepared to feed them.

But: German law chimney sweep mandatory and allowed to go to every room. Old n*zi law. So can't build my own/hook up sth because losing insurance and get a fine.
