VERY interesting. He explained there is a BIG difference between the east coast and the west coast of Florida. West coast storm surge is bad. If the hurricane slows down, storm surge gets worse. Bryan Norcross lets hope it doesn't crawl in or even worse, stall just off the coast, if that happens then you could see surges several times over as it just sits there and churns in the ocean/gulf! all those newbies that moved down there in the last couple of years will be shitting themselves soon while those who have lived there all or most of their lives will be Meh!  Tampa usually fairs pretty well but with all the new construction lately you never know if the natural landscapes that helped in the past have been compromised?? Quoting: Anonymous Coward 83869226 Tampa could have a +9 foot storm surge from the northeast quadrant of this hurricane. That would put a lot of downtown underwater and the offshore islands completely underwater. Today is Monday. That storm is going to affect Tampa Wednesday into Thursday. Short term doom is the best doom! Storm surge is nothing to mess with. People don’t understand that the hurricane sucks tons of water out of the bays and coastal areas and when the eye passes overhead people can walk out onto dry land that would normally be 6’ high water. Once the eye passes, the back end of the storm dumps all those millions of gallons of water back into the area and it surges back. If the hurricane is strong it can cause a small tsunami for 4+ miles inland. Had Irma in 2017 not weakened there would’ve been a 9’ storm surge for 4 miles inland. Most coastal areas are at or a few feet above sea level. It would’ve been devastating. Good post. I feel sorry for people there in the face of this storm. Most of the time I think they are idiots to live there. But hey, right now I just feel sorry for them. If people didn’t live in those areas there wouldn’t be restaurants, rental properties or other activities for the people who come down to vacation. Floridans think northerners are idiots to live where they do during winter storms. Goes both ways. |
