Devastating storm Fiona threw nearly half a million Canadians into darkness, uprooted trees, swept away roads and destroyed the pretty Newfoundland town of Port Aux Basques after it slammed into eastern part of the country on Saturday. Post-Tropical Cyclone Fiona, as it is now called after being downgraded by the National Hurricane Center, punished the coastal towns of Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island New Brunswick and Newfoundland with winds of more than 80 MPH, which knocked out power to 470,000 households. 'We're seeing devastating images come out of Port aux Basques,' Prime Minister Justin Trudeau told the press. 'PEI (Prince Edward Island) has experienced storm damage like they've never seen. Cape Breton is being hit hard, too, as is Quebec.'
The truth is incontrovertible. Malice may attack it, ignorance may deride it, but in the end, there it is.

My brother who lives in a higher elevated area of Port aux Basque had power last night until after midnight. They must have turned it off over night for safety if it didn't go out on it's own.

There is also a report of at least one woman lost to the sea when her house was swept away. Her status was unconfirmed as a search couldn't be conducted until it was safe to do so.

My family is safe, but it's heat breaking to look at the devastating images of a town I use to visit every summer as a teen.

Here is another report from Florida.

Escalating hurricane threat prompts statewide emergency in Florida The entire state of Florida was put under a state of emergency on Saturday as Ian gradually strengthened and gained speed.

With that in mind, the AccuWeather tropical forecast team is warning of the possibility that Ian could undergo rapid intensification in the days ahead as it churns northward and the wind shear continues to subside.

"Because of very warm waters and a forecast minimal amount of disruptive winds, there is the potential for the system to undergo rapid strengthening anytime from this weekend to midweek," AccuWeather Lead Long-Range Meteorologist Paul Pastelok said.

In the Caribbean, people in Jamaica should prepare for deteriorating conditions in the form of progressively heavier downpours and increasing winds later Saturday and Sunday with a close call, and a likelihood of tropical storm conditions.

[link to www.accuweather.com (secure)]

Along the system's path through the western Caribbean islands, there will be the risk of widespread power outages, torrential rain and flooding as well as dangerous and damaging seas. In the Caribbean, the heaviest rain is likely to fall from southwestern Jamaica to part of western Cuba. In portions of Cuba, a general 8-16 inches (200-400 mm) of rain is on the way with an AccuWeather Local StormMax™ of 20 inches (500 mm).

For the anticipated heavy rainfall, damaging wind gusts and dangerous storm surge in the Caribbean, Ian is a 4 on the AccuWeather RealImpact™ Scale for hurricanes.

After striking Cuba, the exact track of Ian across the eastern Gulf of Mexico will be determined by a southward dip in the jet stream across the United States. An area of high pressure that extended from the central Atlantic to the southern Plains of the U.S. Friday will split and allow the system to move northward. That will leave an opening for a southward dip in the jet stream to push the system to the north or northeast, and the speed of that feature will be key in determining the exact trajectory.

Everywhere in Atlantic Canada got hit hard.
PEI lost coastline.
Nova Scotia lost 100 year old trees. Rooves busted. Sheds gone.
2 people got washed out to sea in nfld. 1 body found deceased and 1 person in hospital now.

Philippines on red alert as Super Typhoon Noru roars in
By Idris Mukhtar, Junko Ogura and Sana Noor Haq, CNN
Updated 7:15 AM EDT, Sun September 25, 2022

Rescuers run as they check residents living in the seaside slum district of Tondo as Super Typhoon Noru approaches Manila, in the Philippines, on Sunday.

Authorities in the Philippines were on high alert Sunday as Super Typhoon Noru began to blast through the country’s eastern islands on a path toward its main Luzon island.

The eyewall of the storm, locally known in the Philippines as Super Typhoon Karding, was making landfall in the Polillo Islands at 5 p.m. local (5 a.m. ET), according to an update from the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA).

The storm has sustained winds of 240 kph (149 mph), with gusts up to 295 kph (183 mph), according to the Joint Typhoon Warning Center.

Authorities previously issued an extreme emergency alert as the storm reached super typhoon status early on Sunday morning local time, after suddenly intensifying.

That is sad to see. Trudeau will pour money in to rebuild because they faithfully vote Liberal every election. Perhaps they should consider living more than 15 feet back from the high tide level. Hard to believe those houses weren’t destroyed by another storm surge prior to this one.

The last time anything like this happened was the tsunami of 1929. Very few people left from that time that remember. Almost seems like we're on a 100 cycle.

Tropical Storm Talas kills two in Japan
Meanwhile, authorities in Japan said Sunday that two people had been killed in landslides caused by Tropical Storm Talas.

One person is missing after his car fell into a river, Shizuoka Prefecture government reported.

The prefecture saw its heaviest daily rainfall on record, including a record rainfall of 416.5 mm (over 16 inches) in Suruga-ku, Shizuoka City, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency.

During the downpour, the prefecture urged 1,200,000 households – approximately 3 million people – to evacuate.

More than 1,000 houses and a large number of roads in the prefecture were flooded, it said, adding that multiple bridges have collapsed.

Flights cancelled as storm Hermine hits Spain's Canary Islands
Spain's national weather agency, Aemet, has issued a red weather alert for the islands of Gran Canaria, La Palma and El Hierro from midday until midnight on Sunday, September 25th. The regional government has closed schools on Monday as a precaution.

On Sunday, regional president Angel Victor Torres told a press conference the storm was expected to move closest to the islands between 11 p.m. on Sunday and 11 a.m. on Monday.

Hermine had been expected to strike the Canary Islands as a tropical storm but was downgraded on Sunday to a tropical depression by the U.S. National Hurricane Center. It said heavy rains were expected to continue into Monday.

Tropical Storm Ian expected to rapidly strengthen, parts of SWFL still in forecast cone
[link to nbc-2.com (secure)]

Tropical Storm Ian is strengthening with winds sustained at 50 mph and gusts up to 65 mph. The storm is heading into a very favorable environment in the next 48 hours with very warm sea surface temperatures and low wind shear.

This will allow Ian to strengthen into a major hurricane in the Gulf of Mexico.

Landfall is expected somewhere along the Florida Gulf Coast by Thursday or Friday. Though the sea surface temperatures are still warm in the northeastern Gulf, the wind shear is strong making for a more hostile environment.
