But as we edge closer to nuclear war, why ARE we stoking conflict in Ukraine rather than trying to achieve peace, asks PETER HITCHENS What is Britain’s interest in Ukraine? Why are we shovelling weapons and equipment into that country, despite the fact that our national budget is stretched to bursting and our own armed forces have for many years been starved of money, men and kit? On June 9 1990, Mrs Thatcher (still then in power) spoke to what was then the Ukrainian provincial assembly in Kiev. She briskly batted away a question about opening a British embassy in that city. This, she explained, was as likely as Britain opening an embassy in California or Quebec. ‘I can see you are trying to get me involved in your politics!’ she scolded her questioner, adding: ‘Embassies are only for countries which have full national status. 'Therefore, we have ambassadorial diplomatic relations with the Soviet Union, with the United States, with Canada, with Australia. 'We do not have embassies for California, for Quebec, for states in Australia.’ <50% SNIP [link to www.dailymail.co.uk (secure)] Defence Secretary Ben Wallace says Britain will increase spending on armed forces by at least £52BILLION in response to Russian aggression shakedown |

Quoting: Flying Elvii As an aviation enthusiast and one-time experimental aircraft builder, I did some research on this thing. It is actually an ingenious design, using off-the-shelf commercially-made parts readily available from China, that doesn’t give a damn about the sanctions. It has a very light (35lb), all aluminum, fuel-sipping (3-4 gallons an hour) 50 horsepower two-cycle engine, the Beijing DE-550, which is a copy of the German-made Limbach 550. It is attached to a honeycombed fiberglass fuselage with plastic wings and nose cone. The flight and control systems, like the servos that move the control surfaces, are from a Radio-controlled hobby airplane kit. Along this same line, I am guessing the electronics controls and programmable’s are based on a rasberryPI, they don’t have to be sophisticated. It is built for a one-way trip, so it doesn’t have to be robust. There are pictures of them being launched with a large bottle-rocket, or on wheels. Including the engines, which they obviously buy in bulk at a discount, they probably have less than $15,000 each, including labor in these things. If it were a US Defense acquisition project, they would likely be $250,000 each. [link to twitter.com (secure)] I hear those Shahed's can be reused and come with a parachute in case they need to land. Although I don't understand why the Russian army isn't employing the drones in an all out attack on Himars and AA systems before rolling in the big guns and planes. What can you say about their sensor package? Supposedly the front cone is IR-translucent for an IR camera feed link back to base and the range is 2 000 kms. Not too shabby for something with a moped motor. If any foreign minister begins to defend to the death a "peace conference," you can be sure his government has already placed its orders for new battleships and aeroplanes. |

Not too shabby for something with a moped motor. I imagine that they can put a variety of packages in them… The only real mass production hurdle I can see is the propeller. It can be wood, composite, or metal, but the manufacturing quality needs to be fairly high, especially at the higher rpm’s this motor is definitely running at. The Ukrainians are shooting them down, but using a $200,000 missile to knock out $15,000 drones is a fast-losing proposition. Ukie accounts on Tele are complains about these being sent in swarms. They get some, but most get through. AA radars can’t fix them unless they are right above them, then another comes in to smash that radar. |
