Why do people think this is a good thing? Government to offer "free e-filing" to get rid of turbo tax/etc

If you work for Intuit or friends with those who do, I am sure it's not a good thing. Saner heads could have offered vouchers to folks to who needed it.

I used the free Gov file last year with no problem.

You just need to learn about taxes on your own, never hand those reins to some wage worker.
They don't know everything, only what they see on their computer screen as they fill the forms in.

Reddit makes me laugh. Those people are so smug and left minded, but every 10th post is someone asking for a recommendation for a good therapist.

When you use third party filing you can pay a little extra for audit protection.
They do not want you to have audit protection, thus 87k new IRS agents.

Yeah well when they change the tax laws every year and its about a million pages long, sometimes you dont have time to "learn" everything

Ive done my own before, but my point is a tax preparer has always gotten me more money or paying less than a "free" turbo tax did

And if you think a govt free filing site is gonna give you all the breaks, then i got some planets in outer space for sale just for you

As a tax pro in the business for 8 years, government free file is definitely not going to hurt the big box places. The low income people that get free money don’t care to pay to have it done. It isn’t their money. They don’t even have a concept of how much it costs. They only care how much they get and they want it now. They don’t care in the least.

Turbo tax is my best customer. I’ve fixed SO MANY self prepared turbo tax returns over the years. If you ever go to a tax preparer that complains about losing clients to turbo tax, run. I hate turbo tax too. But only because they give people a false sense of security that they can figure it out. If you have anything more than a few w-2s, go to a pro. I fundamentally disagree with the fact that a professional is required for a thing that everyone has to do. I hope the free file system is super user friendly and accurate so that non business filers can report their taxes for free. But have you seen our government? Have you seen the irs? They shredded documents they couldn’t process then sent out letters to people saying they couldn’t find their documents, please send them again. Lmao.

filing taxes was always free up to about 20 years ago. sometimes, i just download the forms and mail them in and wait for a paper check. then i walk to the bank, fill out a deposit slip and get a piece of candy.

the forprofits will still make money with RAL and personalized service.

I wish the IRS or each state had a tax website and all you have to do is fill out forms online. This I know would be impossible since Obamba care online was a cluster-fu-k.
