Ozzy - Patient Number Nine - My Album Review
We have a lot to get through, up-front. Say the name "Ozzy" and a million different ideas of who and what Ozzy was, could be and is in 2022 will be offered. Many of these offerings will be laced with negativity and I think they need to be addressed and handled before any competent review can be made.

Ozzy is 73 and cannot sing anymore, therefore his vocals are (varying degrees of) fake.

I hear you, I feel you, and your conclusion is hard to escape. However, for those of us who crave Ozzy, we MUST simply accept that this is the only way we will ever get "More" whether it's AI generated, heavily produced, or otherwise.

If you cannot look past it, nothing will encourage you to give this album a fair evaluation.

Ozzy does not write his own material, therefore there's no personal connection to the words and/or he's just spewing out generic "I'm so Dark" content others have written for him.

First of all, he's almost never written anything except vocal melody. A couple of Sabbath songs that are credited to him as his sole lyrical creation are not bad, but nowhere near as good as Geezer Butler's.

Secondly, "Generic Dark" was a rough period that Ozzy went through after Ozzmosis in 1995 and didn't end until the Black Sabbath reunion album "13". I agree with your assessment for that period, and I might add that certain other eras of Ozzy's solo career were very "Cartoonish" and adolescent. Highly regarded eras.

Nothing can ever replace Randy Rhoades.

If you haven't moved on from RR, you are an NPC who just emos whenever there's any opportunity. RR was great, but honestly I don't prefer him to Iommi or Wylde.

I think that covers everything broad a person can say about Ozzy and his solo career. If your mind is still open to Ozzy and you crave new material, please proceed.

I think I was most fond of Paranoid, and after than not much else except Crazy Train from Blizzard of Ozz.

I get kind of selective with most artists especially if their early works were really the gem of their career and everything else deteriorated into just lack-luster attempts to reach that passing peak.

I do like heavy metal, so lots of great bands like AC/DC, Metallica, Slayer, Iron Maiden... all the classics.

Re: Ozzy - Patient Number Nine - My Album Review
Ozzy's latest release, "Patient Number Nine" is a continuation of a collaboration with producer Andrew Watt and a slew of guest musicians. Watt also contributes instrumentation, notably rhythm guitar. Ozzy previously worked with him on recent album "Ordinary Man," a mixed-feelings album of hits, misses and mehs, but nevertheless an impressive offering for a musician of his age.

"PN9", on the other hand, goes beyond apologetics and lunges for the jugular in a way that Ozzy hasn't since the forementioned "Ozzmosis" of 1995. Not even "13" with the Sabbath crew is as aggressive as "PN9".

Ozzy's vocal range and passion are fully restored, no doubt through what must be studio trickery straight off a recovered UFO or ritualistic feeding off of the blood of fresh babies. There simply is no natural explanation and the usual cries of "Auto-Tune!" simply do not suffice. It's Magick of some sort, but it works. It sounds like Ozzy's voice except better than it has been in almost 30 years.

Jeff Beck, Tony Iommi, Eric Clapton and Zakk Wylde are among the various guest musicians who appear on various tracks, as well as the recently departed Taylor Hawkins. Jimmy Page was invited, but did not turn up. He should kick himself for not being a part of this project with these other luminaries.

Sonically, overall, this album sounds exactly like "Ordinary Man" and several of the tracks even smack a bit as rearranged versions of songs from that album. Fortunately, when it does, it's besting those songs most of the time.

Thematically, this collection of songs stays true to "Prince of Darkness" moniker but deepens the content with songs that you can imagine strongly resonate with the aging Ozzy.

The creative team is rock-solid and the production is organic and airy compared to most releases of the last 20 years. Music production has gotten very, very clever at emulating a natural feel. There are a lot of interesting time-signature changes and tones that sound goose-bumpingly vintage. We know it's still all on a laptop with pro-tools, timed out to meter *but* perhaps they've got a new tool to take it off-time and give it swing? IDK...I would love to talk to a top-tier engineer and find out what's going on here.

The Black Sabbath album "Sabotage" blows Paranoid...hmmm...not "out of the water" but makes you create a new slot for what makes Sabbath great.

Sabbath came in a few waves or flavors with Ozzy:

Pagan/Occult
Warfare and it's Horror
Sci-Fi
Drugs
Progressive
Acid
...and then they kind of lost the mission.

"Sabotage" is the heaviest, most trippy and mind-altering album in their catalogue and sits next to "Paranoid" as a Masterpiece. Not often a band has 2, and I argue they have a few more.

After Ozmosis, I lost interest. Down to Earth was okay, but anything after that was more like the "Ozzy brand" than real pure Ozzy, as Jake E. Lee said.

I still love all his Randy and Jake albums, and his first 3 albums with Zakk were good.

I’m a huge sabbath fan..I actually really liked 13…obviously it’s the not the first 5 sabbath album quality. But it still gets a decent amount of play.

Ozzy solo career on the other hand has never done much for me….but I’m gonna give the new record a spin.

RR is flashy. I don't like flash.

I like bone-crushing Heavy and Dark.

BatM is a pretty awesome jam, and though Jake is a shredder, he shows a bit of restraint in service to the tune which Randy, IMO, just didn't, especially live where every other note was a flourish and irritating.

Track 1: Patient Number 9

Featuring Jeff Beck, the title track and album opener is an anthemic trip down Psychiatric lane. At first listen, I found it odd, a harmonic mode on the guitar playing a licky riff rubbed me the wrong way and Ozzy's melodic choices struck me as poppy. But as with many songs on this album, the Chorus comes on strong and hooky and apologizes for any shortcomings of the verses or bridge.

This was released as "single" (insofar as those exist) several weeks ago, and I first listened then. Since that time, the song has driven it's way into my crave center and I seek it out often. One wonders if it is a veiled attack against the Jab, since it's about taking Medicine that you fear is not helping you and maybe harming you, and people telling you you're crazy for not going along with it.

Hmm...

Jeff Beck is on this track but I do not feel any connection to his style or contribution. It could've been anyone as far as I'm concerned.

Overall, a solid title track: 7.9

I kind of based my biases in my teens, and found a lot of 'trippy' sounding music back then not my thing which may be why I favoured Paranoid, however I haven't listened to Sabotage since then so will check it out, maybe I'll have more appreciation for it now that I'm older.

Well, the last album was pretty good and this one is great, so isn't that reason enough to release a new album? Quality? Fan appreciation?

#1 record on the charts?

I mean these are reasons enough.

All of the greats are "Washed up" but we can't move on because nobody is stepping up to replace them.

Jake is/was awesome and one of my favorites of all time. It helps to be a guitar player and know what he was doing to appreciate some of the intricate stuff he wrote and played.

I knew his longtime guitar tech and hearing the real story about how/why he was fired from the band made me detest Ozzy and that only grew over the years after I heard of what him and Sharon have done to other band members (e.g. Bob Daisley, Lee Kerslake, etc).

Ozzy will always have a place in my heart because of Tony, Randy and Jake but personally, I think he's terrible for what he's done to other musicians.

Yeah, there's more actual darkness there than meets the eye, but it also seems to be pervasive amongst all the heavy hitters from the 70's, including Dio. These guys were all going to have solo careers with session musicians, basically....suck all their talent and spit them out.

They all ended up with 3rd tier no-names as a result, though I do quite like Craig Goldy he's from the Blackmore/Iommi school and does it well.

Track Number 2: "Immortal" featuring Mike McCready of Pearl Jam

I always laugh at Ozzy's endless tracks describing what he is or what he is not.

This is another, but the energy level is very high, the guitar licks are pretty sweet. Strong hooky chorus once again.

Short but sweet, a bit cartoonish like something from "No Rest for the Wicked" but a welcomed callback.

Track Number 3 "Parasite" featuring Zakk Wylde

Rage Against the Machine vibe opens it up.

Very 70's arrangement on the Verses...Sabbath meets Kiss tonally.

Chorus vocal melody is very different for Ozzy until the punchline which gives a solid landing.

Great restrained solo from Zakk, no Pinch Harmonics (Did he finally get a hold of himself???)

Punchy, heavy ending.

I love Jake and Zakk and have followed them throughout their solo careers.

I can't say I can name any of Ozzy's other guitar heros though and to be quite fucking honest, if I listen to an Ozzy album today, Randy Fucking Rhoads will be playing on it. If I listen to a Sabbath album, Ronnie James Dio will be singing on it.

Track Number 4 "No Escape From Now" Featuring TONY FUCKING IOMMI, thank you very much!

Acoustic Intro with "Planet Caravan" effected vocal gives way to Punchy, Heavy Verse...acoustic bridge with hunting vocals with sweet harmonies.

Iommi interlude brief and trilly, just how you want it.

*Important Obsevation*

Ozzy has range and energy far surpassing anything he gave us on Sabbath Reunion "13"

...and this track is like everything you wish 13 was but only hinted at, except for a few exceptional tracks.

Track has free-flowing, changing sections reminiscent of something from Vol.4 - Sabotage.

In fact, there is a mid-section Tempo Change that, like on 13 how they attempted this more than once...particularly "Nowhere to Run, nowhere to hide..." section of "God Is Dead?" a go at a very familiar riff to "Hole In the Sky" except this time, it's been perfected.

This is the Sabbath we all wanted from an Ozzy reunion!

Soft landing to the end where "Planet Caravan" vocals resolve the track back to origin.

If Only Geezer and Bill had been a part of this for all the feels, but honestly you don't miss them here. The musicianship is organic and tight.

I don't see it that way.

It's a blues track featuring Eric Clapton.

In the blues you have bad times, you know? Days that make you question your faith.

I believe the subtext is that most days he does believe in Jesus, but this particular day was very, very trying.

Track Number um...5?...yes, 5 "One of Those Days" Featuring "God" Eric Clapton (Not in my opinion, but excited he's here as a big name supporting Ozzy)

Ozzmosis intro gives way to a little Blues Noodling from Clapton using a Cream tone.

Gives way to a "High and Dry"/"Mob Rules" little clean, airy, spacey strum/picked section that I LOVE. Verse lays over this.

STRONG as hell hook for the chorus, very Fresh and easily relatable. "One of those days that I don't believe in Jesus"

Ozzy is not over-compressed and too far in front on this track. Nicely engineered in a classic way.

Guitar solo section is VERY Creamy. Fits nicely into a modern blues-metal track. Reminds a bit of Sabbath Debut, since they were borrowing a bit from Cream (NIB) in the first place.

Christians, don't be too upset...remember Ozzy ultimately does NOT believe that "God Is Dead?" and remember, He's part of the team that gave us "After Forever".

Track Number 6: A Thousand Shades Featuring Jeff Beck

Beatles Track opening, Verse delivered with nothing of note.

Really does have a Dark twist on a Lennon/McCartney collaboration during the verses.

Again with the strong, hooky chorus. This album would be a rock solid singles generator back in the day.

Beck's Solo is uplifting in a melancholy song.

Great mix here, again, Ozzy blended flawlessly with the bed.

String section ending...I've heard this before, can't remember where, it was either Beatles or Ozzy lol so fits right in, but it was pretty much lifted whole-cloth from pre-existing material or very close to.

Track Number 7, "Mr. Darkness" Featuring Zakk Wylde

Renfesty opening, but into the verse you start to wonder..."Didn't I just hear this?"

Very samey-same but...

HOLY FUCKING SHIT

The verse gives way to an ass kicking-section that is fresh and Powerful! It's short, leaves you wanting more of THAT but back to the verse, which is now forgiven on account of knowing what's coming lol.

Zakk has adopted a very Iommian style. There's a mid-section that has a touch of "Symptom of the Universe" vibe on the guitar before going in to more Zakk soloing.

The entire last 2/3 of this song never stops kicking ass. Zakk is on FIRE without pinch harmonicing all over the place.

Oh no! That's very unfortunate :(

The bow on the end of this track ends with an embarrassment, a scar on an otherwise shining track.

Ozzy says in a stupid voice "You don't even know my name asshole!"

I really didn't need that. It's childish and needlessly vulgar which a lot of Ozzy fans won't mind, but for me it rubs me the wrong way.

8.0 that should've been an 8.5
