Track 1: Patient Number 9
Featuring Jeff Beck, the title track and album opener is an anthemic trip down Psychiatric lane. At first listen, I found it odd, a harmonic mode on the guitar playing a licky riff rubbed me the wrong way and Ozzy's melodic choices struck me as poppy. But as with many songs on this album, the Chorus comes on strong and hooky and apologizes for any shortcomings of the verses or bridge.
This was released as "single" (insofar as those exist) several weeks ago, and I first listened then. Since that time, the song has driven it's way into my crave center and I seek it out often. One wonders if it is a veiled attack against the Jab, since it's about taking Medicine that you fear is not helping you and maybe harming you, and people telling you you're crazy for not going along with it.
Hmm...
Jeff Beck is on this track but I do not feel any connection to his style or contribution. It could've been anyone as far as I'm concerned.
Overall, a solid title track: 7.9
