Quoting: Anonymous Coward 81597136 You either have free speech or you don’t, there’s no in between. There are laws regarding this. Causing a public disturbance/threatening behaviour/obstruction. Its not the protest, its THE LANGUAGE ON THE SIGN. and i would be willing to bet, the only language in question was the other side of the sign, the one that read "abolish the monarchy" Nope, people are free to protest the monarchy as they like but when its threatening, people get upset, especially if its some green haired fat planet. who was getting threatened ? if protesting monarchy is passable its criticisms of imperialism that arent tolerated ? i suppose i could buy that considering whos getting flustered . |

Why would that be? Just the other side of those gates, this happened. |

Quoting: lightchild_uk From the European Convention on Human Rights "The exercise of these freedoms, since it carries with it duties and responsibilities, may be subject to such formalities, conditions, restrictions or penalties as are prescribed by law and are necessary in a democratic society, in the interests of national security, territorial integrity or public safety, for the prevention of disorder or crime, for the protection of health or morals, for the protection of the reputation or rights of others, for preventing the disclosure of information received in confidence, or for maintaining the authority and impartiality of the judiciary." You either have free speech or you don’t, there’s no in between. We don't have complete free speech, but we don't claim to either. What would happen in the US if the police saw a young lady with a Fuck Trump sign at a Trump rally? she'd be removed by his security most likely , but it wouldnt be the police arresting her unless she happened to be violating some criminal statue . holding signs in america isnt a crime ...yet. |

The job of the UK police is "The Primary duties are the protection of life and property, preservation of the peace, and prevention and detection of criminal offences" By arresting her they prevented any kind of trouble, what if some people started attacking her? They protected her life and preserved the peace. This happened in Scotland on Friday night. |

She was only arrested, she will have her day in court. If found not guilty, then she could sue the police for unlawful arrest. Also "Policing in the UK is grounded in the principle of ‘policing by consent’. Derived from the nine principles of policing developed by the founder of the Metropolitan Police, Robert Peel, the notion of ‘policing by consent’ is rooted in the belief that for policing to be effective, there must be broad public support for a police service's actions." So you would thing you were safe and within your rights to walk into the majority area of another race, say a ghetto in the USA with a "FK whoever" sign? Would or would not the Police be quite likely saving YOUR life if they moved you on. |

She was only arrested, she will have her day in court. If found not guilty, then she could sue the police for unlawful arrest. so, in other words, yes, a tyrannical government can use the excuse of public safety and preserving the peace to prevent freedom of speech. then, when "getting her day in court", the same tyrannical government judge would agree that the freedom of speech doesn't apply because of the threat to public safety.
