Is Atlas Shrugged Worth the Read
Sorry, my question mark key does not work.

I am nearly 60 years old. When I was young, I was an avid reader. Voracious, maybe.

I have read '1984', I have read 'Looking Backward' by Edward Bellamy.

I have not read 'Atlas Shrugged'. Should I read it or is it just more junk...
What the Hell?...

It's a long read, but really worth the time. If you do read, come back and encourage others.

all worthwhile. anthem being much shorter than the first two.

i would imagine she wrote other stuff worth reading...but i can only speak for those 3.

atlas shrugged and anthem are very poignant for todays world.

I'm not such a leftist that I think it is isn't a work and author who should not be considered. Really dishonest to say the books doesn't make it's point and should be labeled and dismissed out of hand. But I'm fairly apolitical, idealistic, but pragmatic. 1dunno1

this Is a book that will change you. It is a challenging read and the first fourth of the book may be too slow moving to keep you captivated. For a while I would read this every 5 years. The movies a a decent representation but they are off putting as the actors portraying the characters are swapped out.

Same here. Get it from the library so you can take it back if you don't like it.

I wanted to like it but it was too money oriented. It's all that people cared about. I don't even like to be around people like that let alone go about the chore to read a book with that sort of characters.

That's just personal preference, of course. You may find you like it. Just not everyone does.

Re: Is Atlas Shrugged Worth the Read
Reading Atlas Shrugged was life-changing for me. Completely life-changing. I would recommend reading the first 600 pages or so. Really, once you get to John Galt's big speech, you've covered everything the story has to impart. The speech is way too long, way too redundant, and throws off the flow of the book. Read up to that part, glance through a little bit of the speech, and skip to the final pages if you really need resolution or closure on the character arcs. I didn't need it.

I don't know why people have such an aversion to this book. I don't think it's garbage. I could never understand how the notion of meritocracy as a benefit to society is viewed as dangerous.

Another good one in a similar vein is All the Kings Men (Robert Penn Warren, I think), which is also a good read. Much shorter and also very enlightening.

I wasn't particularly impressed with Anthem and wouldn't recommend. For a similar theme, I would recommend This Perfect Day (That Perfect Day) by Ira Levin of Rosemary's Baby fame. I read that before Anthem and thought it was much more effective and utterly terrifying.

Re: Is Atlas Shrugged Worth the Read
I liked both Fountainhead and Atlas. Some people read the books as a painful political exercise, just to be able to say they’ve read them. If so, I would skip it. Other, deeper readers, discover many fascinating things about themselves and their own true and perhaps repressed beliefs. Which are you?

Re: Is Atlas Shrugged Worth the Read
just curious,

whenever they take away all the productive power, what happens to the 'parasites'?

how does one distinguish oneself from 'parasites', according to this model? is it net worth? some well-defined measure of, usefulness to society?

is it the people you know, or the places you've been? or the places you'll go? 0
