There should be 2 separate prep lists. One for short duration power loss and one for long duration or permanent.

10 years ago we lost power for 9 days; 7 of which hit 100 degrees. Miserable. Keeping cool was the worst part, I enjoyed the quiet but even the basement was hot after day 4. There was also no ice to be had locally.

I also plunked down a good bit of cash to have some proper hand forged shortswords made earlier this year. Gotta plan for running out of ammo

Just a reminder. Might be a good idea to print some of these tips out from the links provided.

We've has several power outages last month due to storms. 30 miles away was a freak tornado with winds 70+ mph and hail the size of base balls that destroyed the town - and took out the entire county's power (4k sq miles worth). Now we have fires and evacuations occurring 30 miles away in Hells Canyon. Being prepared helps deal with the unexpected.

"USA Today states “About once every four days, part of the nation's power grid — a system whose failure could leave millions in the dark — is struck by a cyber or physical attack.”

The site PowerOutage.US shows current outages, aggregating utility company data from around the United States.

California is likely to see more outages and brownouts this summer. PG&E has intentionally caused widespread outages to avoid fires. California has announced they will do it again this summer and other states are starting to talk about similar outages for various reasons.

Feb 2021 saw widespread Texas grid power outages due to cold weather. January 2022 featured widespread outages lasting over a week in some areas of the eastern United States."

Well I spend 5 months without power after Hurricane Maria!

From My perspective it's not That Caos Escenario..

Depends on where You live!

People in situations like this, they tend to behave different. Most people tend to look after each one and the human touch comes out, at least here in the island!

You need to Understand that after 7pm, Everything is Off!

It's very complicated to Unplugg from the current life style!

Re: What to Do When the Power Goes Out (12 Things to Prepare)
let me expand on OP's list-

#1 & 2> know where these are before the power goes out. check them and upgrade. candles do no good with no matches or a bic lighter handy. batteries do leak and bulbs go bad. having 1 is none. none will help if u can't find them in the dark.

#3> many might not realize this 1. as soon as u lose power, immediately turn the bath tub cold spigot on and plug the tub. depending on your location, u may get lots of water that is already in the city pipes. especially if u are on the low side of town from the plant, resevoir, or water tank. won't last long but this is water. fill jugs as well. tub water can b used to wash hands and flush the toilet.

#4> see above. and only flush when needed.

#5> depends what u have and how long the power is off. meat thawed out and it stays off longer, u may want the smell around near the street to deter raiders. paper can b burned. if off long term, u will want to bury food waste, or u will have rats.

6> yes and no. batteries and candles is back up. beyond that u do not want to call attention by having lights on and smoke going up chimneys. propane would help with heat without the smoke.

7>food- most ppl have some canned goods stashed. remember the fruit is canned with water, drinkable. extra cans of ravioli or fruit will feed u a while after u eat up the food in the frig. avoid opening the frig to conserve the cold. if u are up north and it is winter, transfer meat to coolers and stash them outside. car/ unheated porch works well. rotate well, u can keep the food frozen much longer.

8 and 9> off grid cooking- some pans and a candle. we are only heating up canned food. remember too newer gas stoves won't even light without electricity. try it, pull the plug and see if yours will light. safety features. also be careful of carbon monoxide when cooking or heating with open flames.

10> battery radio. a family plan for if the grid goes down long term and u can't use the car. how will everyone get home or where to meet at?

add defenses to the list. notebook and pen to brainstorm in case it doesn't come back on. for kids- coloring books and games. books, books. garden and digging tools. hand tools. extra blankets. duct tape -use this to help cover windows.

I live in Louisiana and have survived many devastating hurricanes that cause the power to go out for MONTHS...

Gas stations run out of gas, stores have no power, their goods are ruined and can't be salvaged, the marauding hoards prey on those with generators, as they act as a beacon calling the bad guys in..

MONTHS I tell you...

Blackout bread, bake without electricity, with tea lights! Also for preppers can click on CC English sub-titles

Oct 8, 2022 What is blackout bread? A blackout bread is not just for preppers, but first and foremost, for everyone! We never know what will happen and there have been so many talks about a blackout in the past. A blackout is a power outage and we can all relate to this word. That is why it is important to be well informed. That's why I want to show you in this video how you can bake bread without electricity even in the worst case scenario, in the event of a blackout or power failure. I hope we never experience it, but it's always important to know how to help yourself. What I'm going to show you today is a worst-case scenario of baking bread without electricity if the baker's is out of electricity or your oven isn't working because of a power outage. And I promise and prove to you that it's not just any bread, but really good and, above all, delicious bread.

To bake bread with tea lights, you can use bread dough up to 500g. It is also important that you have two pots that fit into each other or that you have one pot that comfortably fits a baking pan or springform pan. You need enough tea lights (please pay attention to the important information in the video), these should have a burning time of at least 4 hours.

As described in the video, you should consider the distance from the ground to the pot as much as possible. Of course, this depends on how heavy the pot is and how much the grating pushes through. The flames of the candles should not touch the bottom of the pot if possible (and if they do, it is not so tragic). However, the heat directly above the flame is hottest and most effective.

If necessary, a normal stainless steel pot with a glass lid is also suitable as a pot, it may just take a little longer in it. A cocotte (a roaster) is best. This stores and conducts the heat best.

If you want to support me to see new videos from me in the future, please press "Like" and subscribe to my channel. You help me a lot to keep growing here on YouTube.

In any case, I wish you a lot of fun imitating it, because this is not just about the bread, but also about how good you are at improvising. Afterwards, the result tastes good too.

Have fun and bon appetit!

In the video I chose the following ingredients:
450 grams of all purpose flour or bread flour
1-2 tsp dry yeast
1-1.5 tsp salt
280ml of water

If you want to bake with 500g flour, use 300ml water. The rest stays the same.

Wheat flour or spelled flour, type 405, 550, 630, 1050, works best. Wholemeal should also work well. Rye flour only proportionately, max 15%
The truth is incontrovertible. Malice may attack it, ignorance may deride it, but in the end, there it is.
