California is likely to see more outages and brownouts this summer. PG&E has intentionally caused widespread outages to avoid fires. California has announced they will do it again this summer and other states are starting to talk about similar outages for various reasons. Anonymous Coward User ID: 83431496 United States 09/03/2022 11:51 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Been there, done this, for about 6 weeks after Sandy. Right after the flooding, we were hit with a Nor'easter. Here is what you absolutely need: 1) A wood stove. Not a pellet stove, because you won't be able to get more pellets. Not a gas stove, for obvious reasons. A wood stove with a top big enough for a cokking pan and a lobster pot. 2) An enameled large lobster/canning pot. When filled with water and heated up on the wood stove, it provides just a little bit more than you need to wash your hair, suds up everywhere, and rinse off in the tub. A warm rinse can change your whole day. 3) A root cellar. You can make a mini-version by burying a steel garbage can in the ground up to the rim. Ice may not be available, so use cooler ground temps to store food. 4) Lots and lots of lighters, starter fluid, etc. 5) Fluffy down comforters. You cannot have too many. Seriously. 6) A wood/coal grill, for cooking meat. I even made pizza in ours. Propane goes fast, so go wood. 7) Solar powered string lights. Most of them suck, but get the big bulb variety. Invest in a few LED exterior solar lights, too. Mount a few indoors, near windows, wo they can charge. They run about $120/pair, but they are obnoxiously bright, and can run all night. They will light up your room enough to make your house glow from outside. 8) For the long haul, you are going to need a good hunting multi-purpose rifle, ammo, and a bunch of fishing gear. And some snares/traps. To fill your grill. 9) Warm socks. Lots of them. And good boots for everyone. And gloves. 10) Axes and wood splitter. 11) Build a water catch with 50-gallon drums and build a water filter that does not need any commercial filters. Both are easy to do. |
