Any of you have any advice for my stepdad who has "pseudogout"?
My poor stepdad is in his 80s and already has a crappy back that hurts all the time.

Out of nowhere, one of his hands swelled up and was red and hot. It looked like a balloon! He never complains, EVER, but this time he was really hurting enough that he could barely function.

Tests and tests later, we are told he has "pseudogout" arthritis.

Have you guys even heard of this?

And if so, is there a special diet you know of that can help, or supplements, possibly?

Any tricks and tips very much appreciated for him. Prayers too. He's getting way too old to be in this much pain :'(
Goodbye, halcyon days...

There is a theory which states that if ever anyone discovers exactly what the Universe is for and why it is here, it will instantly disappear and be replaced by something even more bizarre and inexplicable.

There is another theory mentioned, which states that this has already happened.

That's easy enough and safe enough to try without having to worry. We'll give this a try.

Get his uric acid levels checked? If he is a heavy drinker he should stop might be good enough but in most cases just needs to take meds to lower it.

Try turmeric complex for Inflammation. Helps about as good as an otc anti-inflammatory.

Uric acid from urine crystallized. Little knives in the joints and terrible inflammation. And which can range from discomfort to the worst imaginable pain.

Once you have it, it's bad to go through.

To try to prevent it again, stay overhydrated.

Drink lots of water and pee flush constantly.

He and my mother never drink. I think he was raised as a Baptist LOL

I know they did check his uric acid levels and it was abnormal (whatever that meant).

Turmeric is a good anti-inflammatory I didn't even think of. I'm not allowed to take it because I'm allergic to NSAIDs, but he isn't, so maybe he can try that too.

They have him on corticosteroids right now and he is getting really grumpy.

If his ua levels are about 7 then he needs to take meds to lower them. Normally they will not start these meds until after the attack he has now gets better. As the meds can make it worse at the start.

But that is for normal gout made by the high ua. pseudogout is different. They should be able to check the joints fluid and say for sure. There is a lot of "guessing" if they don't do these tests

Re: Any of you have any advice for my stepdad who has "pseudogout"?
First of all it could be a clot.

But if its the whole hand they call it pseudogout otherwise if it was a joint it would be gout.

Gout is Uric Crystals and I took curcumin, nattiknionaise and bromain, not sure about the spelling, too tired to look it up but pineapple enzymes, and cherry extract. And ibprofen, but it cleared up quickly.

In the food department they give roughly the same things and then recommend chickpeas.

I love hummus and made my own and experienced a big gout attack.

So their solutions also are known in studies to cause gout, chickepeas cause gout like oysters, etc.

Now look at this:

So this is different than uric acid, but they're both crystals.

For calcium type cyrstals you take:
K2.

Also Boron.

calcium type build up in cartrilidge in knee and body. Mainly targets knee and wrist.

200 micrograms. K2 takes calcium from places you aren't supposed to have it and puts it in the bone.

And take it with D3. So he wants you to take 20 000 iu's of D3, I am more conservative and think between 5-10 000 iu's of D3.

He says if its really bad to take 400 micrograms of K2.

My k2 is in 100 amounts so that would be taking 2 of them or even up to 4 and 1 is for up to 10000 D3, so 2 is 20 000, and 4 is 40 000 Iu's.

This also really brings down the inflammation as its anti inflammatory.

Now Boron also does this.

So maybe add that for a different time, or at least add it every other day, or twice a week, for the Boron.

K2 every day with D3. 200-400 mg of K2 depending on severity of pain or if he's having an episode. I'd go a little lower on the D3, am aware nature puts things in balance, so it may work better in a certain ratio but still.

I take 5000 at the most usually unless sick. Then may consider 10 000 iu's of D3.

Though if in concern about D3, there is this good video as well.

The cherry juice is for gout. Uric Acid. Pseudogout is calcium crystals and it takes K2 with D3, K2 takes the calcium away from the wrong areas and puts in your bones.

Boron helps.

Magnesium citrate helps, I have some just hate the stuff, should have got the pills not the sweet sickly powder.

They're diff.

Now cherries do help, they regulate insulin which can help with pre diabetes and vascular problems that result from that including gout and this other form.

I've had several episodes of gout. 2 tins of canned oysters did it the first time and my beautiful wonderful organic hummus. That one broke my heart.

Its a good idea to not take calcium supplements or tums/rolaids any form of calcium like that. It increases vascular and stroke/heart issues.

You know what, I think he does take TUMS - I've seen it in their cabinet and I don't think it's for my mom. My mom has diabetes, so maybe that cherry juice I just ran out and bought will help her instead, so it's not a total loss.

Okay, so pseudogout and regular gout are different things. I figured as much, but thank you so much for explaining the difference! I was confused.

Okay, so no more TUMS and get that grumpy old fart some boron (and K2 and D3, which I think he already takes the D3 since I made them both start taking that)!
