Groupthink is a phenomenon that occurs when a group of individuals reaches a consensus without critical reasoning or evaluation of the consequences or alternatives. Groupthink is based on a common desire not to upset the balance of a group of people.

The Asch conformity experiments were a series of psychological experiments conducted by Solomon Asch in the 1950s. The experiments revealed the degree to which a person's own opinions are influenced by those of a group. The testing of the experiment by Solomon Asch reveals, that one subject denies the evidence of his own eyes and yields to group influence. He knows he is correct and goes along with the group to avoid the discomfort of disagreeing with the group.

The power of the group merely came from the unanimity of its opposition. When that unanimity is punctured, the power is greatly reduced. Sometimes we go along with the group because what they say convinces us that they are right, this is called "informational conformity". Sometimes we conform because we're apprehensive that the group will disapprove if we are deviant. This is called "normative conformity".

The essence of groupthink is that groups create psychological pressure on individuals to conform to the views of leaders and other members. In groupthink, the quest for unanimous opinion can override our ability to objectively consider other views. In an era of social media and accountability, those that do not manage their response to divergent viewpoints face reputational risk. Groupthink in cohesive groups fails to consider alternative perspectives because they are motivated to reach a consensus which typically results in making less than desirable decisions.

Large groups of people all tend to think alike, this also illustrates how easily people's opinions can be swayed by social media—even by artificial users known as bots. The social and political consequences of groupthink may be far-reaching, and history has many examples of major blunders that have been the result of decisions reached in this way.

Members of the group share an illusion of invulnerability that creates excessive optimism and encourages taking abnormal risks.

Morality

Pressure
Self-censorship

How does social media promote individuality? In this one example; how teenagers interact with and present themselves on social media can lead to a lack of individuality. Due to the increasingly blurred line between social media and reality, how an individual presents themselves online tends to be an extension of their real self.

Why is groupthink bad? Groupthink is a cognitive bias. Groupthink is defined as the practice of approaching issues as matters to be dealt with by the consensus of a group rather than by individuals acting independently. Groupthink can lead collective rationalization, lack of personal accountability, and pressure to acquiesce.

If we understand the effects of groupthink, we can take the necessary steps to overcome it. Frequent instances of groupthink do not produce harmony in beliefs. They suppress individual ideas to reach group agreement and following. It can lead to a lack of creativity, ignorance of important information, and resistance to new information or ideas. It suppresses personal thoughts and opinions, which are essential to our identities as people.

The current culture and way of life on social media promotes groupthink. Friends don't stop friends from thinking critically. Groupthink (in negative situations) stifles thinkers, leaving them wounded victims who usually end up disillusioned and dissatisfied. Eventually, the enthusiasm begins to fade. Soon, the people who are supposed to be allies have fallen back and are no longer engaging, or worse, they decide to become the group’s antagonist. Groupthink can make good people turn bad!

Additionally, well-intentioned people sometimes make irrational or non-optimal decisions/choices fueled by the urge to conform or the discouragement of dissent. Groupthink fosters a strong “us versus them” mentality, forcing members to accept group perspectives in the heat of the moment, even when these perspectives don’t necessarily align with their personal views. This should never happen.

'WE', as a collective whole, should be confident in our own psyche to process and trust what we see and hear, without worry or concern about what others may think or retribution.

I always find these sorts of approaches to the subject of groupthink odd, because personally I was introduced to the idea in engineering courses.

The specific case always highlighted in those contexts is the Challenger disaster. Of course there were plenty of others as well, but that was always the highlight: hundreds of the best scientists and engineers, dozens of whom knew about the exact problem/risk, and no one said a thing.

It seems to occur differently in the modern day however. At the absolute minimum, the internet enables a certain amount of outsider dissent that at the very least has to be actively ignored or dismissed. The NASA engineers didn't have dissent on the sidelines that they had to dismiss by calling them crazy Nazis. Convenient, considering where we looted our rocket scientists from.

Yup .....They tell us ...group is the answer and the group has the solution when I found the opposite to be true.

The reason they want you affiliated in groups is so they can more easily control you as a collective force, with their own people in charge, to be sure.

The truth of our time is this...: the group is where slavery exists. The group is a mob. The group is a herd.

If anything history teaches us is that real attainment is by and through the individual. For the attaining individual soul is beyond the herd, the group, the mob. He or she is their own leader, teacher, and source of spiritual guidance, rather than letting someone tell them what to think, do, or feel.

Do your own thinking, doing, and feeling. Letting someone else do that for you is simply an act of insanity, in an insane time period.

Get organized and become a group and they’ll destroy you and the group and hence, anything of value you might accomplish.

It's human nature to want to fit in, being social animals. It takes a special kind of person to be the lone dissenter but that's exactly what is needed to disrupt the groupthink mentality that leads to bad decisions being made (policies, military strategies etc.)

Re: "Groupthink" isn't just a catchphrase. This experiment analyzes behavior under the pressure of social forces.
I remember some of my first experiences observing group think in action and just having a shit eating grin on my face because I assumed everyone was joking.

I'm nobody special and I'd never consider myself the smartest person in any given room etc. but people who are the quickest to jump or disassociate from others/shut down all dialogue because.... not even because they disagree... sometimes because they don't agree ENOUGH(?) seem like they're in a huge hurry to try to leave no doubt that they aren't rubbing a whole ton of brain cells together at any given time.

So it's always fascinating to me to watch how vehemently a group of people can get, even to their own detriment, to echo in tune with the echo that's echoing. Why? For a sense of belonging? What the actual fuck do you belong to if you're just parroting just to prove how colorful your feathers are?

I feel like groupthink has rapid fire turned into "hive mind" more and more since 2008. Or maybe it's just shape shifted and was always there, I don't know.

On another timeline this shit is still parody. But not on this one.

Anyway sorry for the ramble. Cool thread, thank you much for sharing it's really interesting :)

Very well stated, Phen. Good thread. I guess they did the studies fairly recently, but the 'mechanisms' of conformity and the power of consensus opinion have been known for thousands of years. Together with the 'worship' of authority figures, to produce wanted behaviour in the 'flock'. The 'controllers' are well versed in human psychology.

Organised religion, science and medicine, law and education and politics of all stripes and royalty and the 'elite' classes. All have authority and are appealed to by group thinkers.

The most recent 'things', like covid/vax and Ukraine/Russia are managed for group think.

Emotive displays, rather than rational presentations are the preferred way to get the group thinkers to respond as predicted/needed. This is because when the mind is in an emotional turmoil, rational practical thinking goes out the door. Whip the mob into a frenzy and they'll destroy any opposition without mercy.

Groupthink has alot to do with zodiac fixed, mutable, and cardinal signs. Leadership and behavior plays a key role in influence just by nature of the ability to use power of suggestion on certain signs.

Cardinal signs will provide ideas. Fixed signs will carry out those ideas into fruition. Mutable signs will follow under group think.

Its not like there is much room for discussion on the subject after a certain point.

Or rather there is, but the pro and even neutral vaccine side of it doesn't want to pursue that discussion. They want to cling to their assortment of bad studies with cherrypicked datasets. As well as claiming that everyone on earth who is not dead of the measles is not dead specifically because of vaccines and that improvements to hygiene and sanitation between 1900 and 1950 did absolutely nothing. As well as ruling the entire subject of "Hey, where did all these diseases and conditions that practically didn't exist pre-1950 come from?" as off-limits.

Those people are not worth entertaining. Anyone who suggests that doing a twin experiment where one twin receives no vaccines and the other receives the full schedule would be completely unethical because you arn't allowed to not vaccinate a child is not only refusing to engage in open thinking but is actively advocating for ignorance.

Of course, if you really want to see the nature of open-mindedness in the vaccine discussion, I know exactly the position to hold: Childhood vaccine schedules is a matter of importance to the government/society/culture/powers at be if and only if they are conducted solely for the sake of increasing the prevalence of autism spectrum individuals in the population. The diseases they prevent are, on the scale of the system as a whole, completely insignificant. Their change to the population curve and demographics are much more cheaply replicated using a plethora of different methods to nudge the fertility rate a miniscule amount. However, anyone who has walked around an engineering college and taken a look at how much eye contact goes on among the students will quickly understand that while most affected by autism will be a net loss for society, a small percentage of them become a significant boon producing significant benefits, so significant that it justifies the entire program. Making 5% of kids nonfunctional morons and 5% allergic to peanut butter is absolutely worth it to double our nations supply of STEM geniuses. So give it to everyone, except for my kids... (((religious))) reasons, ya know?

Groupthink is a phenomenon that occurs when a group of individuals reaches a consensus without critical reasoning or evaluation of the consequences or alternatives. Groupthink is based on a common desire not to upset the balance of a group of people.

Watch this interesting video, where a "test" was performed, involving several individuals. "Groupthink" isn't just a catchphrase. The experiment analyzes behavior under the pressure of social forces.

Morality
Stereotypes
Pressure
Self-censorship
The illusion of Unanimity

THE textbook example of what you're saying . In the U.K during the peak scaremongering of the scamdemic , they had the population outside on their own doorsteps performing a ritual of banging saucepans every Thursday at 8 P.M in "support of our NHS" - I wish I was making this up but I'm not

Well, by not being a sheep and atanding my groind against multiple people, I have stopped several serious crimes occurring.

I'll stick to my guns til the day I leave this place. Not dying a coward. Not living with someone's harm or death on my head due to lack of action.
