Re: I only feel like watching British WWII movies lately. You?
Until recently I barely watched TV or films at all. However about 6 months ago my friend put me on to "Talking Pictures" TV on Freeview (UK)

This shows loads of old films (quite a lot of old British films) and quite frankly they wipe the floor with the crap that passes for "entertainment" these days. There are actual plots, excellent character acting, splendid humour and no reliance whatsoever on bloody special effects.

Since then I've taken to watching the odd film whilst I'm having my tea and there are some absolutely cracking old films on there.

Recently I watched "Alive And Kicking" a film about three old ladies who escape from their nursing home and go to live on an island off the Irish coast where they end up selling sweaters to a fashion house in London.

Bloody marvellous ! And showed how piss poor modern script writing and acting is in comparison.

Modern cinema is bollocks, focus group driven shite with a total focus on making money.

Mr Selfridge. Downton Abbey. Call the Midwife.Even Antiques Road show Brit edition. And am a proud American. Can't stomach ugly current themes.
cancelled everything and subscribe to Britbox.
Somehow soothing. Very weird.

What are y'all watching?
 Quoting: humbird

The Man in the High Castle. Related to WWII but only if the Allies had lost. It's a bit intense but there are some really good plot twists!

I enjoyed Downtown Abbey and Mr. Selfridge as well. Have you ever watched The Paradise?

OP you have to check out a series called

MINDER

It’s a comedy / drama series set in London late 70’s / Early 80’s about a dodgy businessman and his long-suffering ex con bodyguard.

It’s absolutely superb.

Re: I only feel like watching British WWII movies lately. You?
Howard Beale (Peter Finch), an acclaimed anchor at the UBS Evening News, is put out to pasture because he too old. News division president Max Schumacher (William Holden), Howard's best friend, is forced to deliver the decision. Beale can't stomach the idea of losing his 25-year post as anchorman simply because of age, so in his next broadcast he announces to the viewers that he's going to commit suicide on his final program...

The network wants Beale immediately fired, but Schumacher gives him a chance to apologize on the air. What he doesn't count on is Beale using this camera time to go off on another tirade that to everyone's surprise resonates with the audience.

Re: I only feel like watching British WWII movies lately. You?
I watch mainly old movies, but no longer fond of war movies

I prefer the gritty English 'drama' type films, such as this one - which does a good job of portraying how life was like in the 60s and 70s in a Borstal (youth prison)

Starring Ray Winstone

Did watch Man in the High Castle. Excellent.

Wasn't the Paradise subtitled foreign film?

If you like WW2/UK, check out a series from a few years ago titled "Danger UXB" (1979) which was a british bomb squad specializing in unexploded ordnance (UneXploded Bombs).

Very well put together series IMHO.

Apparently you can stream season 1 via Acorn on Amazon Prime video, or you can opt to buy the series on DVD.
